Nike SB Dunk High Elite History
Back in the year 2002, the brand opted to turn their 80s b-ball classic the Nike Dunk into a skate-worthy footwear. Known as the Nike SB Dunk Low, the sneaker featured a low-cut profile, increased padding, Zoom air insoles as well as a modified traction pattern.
Fast forward to March 2017; the SB Dunk Low has been upgraded to meet the demands of present-day skaters. While it kept the original design intact, this modernized version, which is also a pro rider Sean Malto rendition, was equipped with a bigger midsole Zoom Air bag for better impact protection and a seamless one-piece upper for enhanced durability.
For the high-top version of this product, Nike saw it fit to combine the SB Dunk Low Elite’s innovative construction with the SB Koston 3’s design. The 2016 SB Koston 3 is a recent addition to American pro skateboarder Eric Koston's line which integrated the Flyknit collar of the Nike Magista, a soccer cleat-inspired silhouette launched in 2014.
Equipped with the same Flyknit cuff, the reasonably new Nike SB Dunk High Elite became a better skate sneaker option as it offered secured lock-in fit for the heels and ankles. First put on the market on July 20, 2017, in limited quantities. team rider Kevin Terpening chose to dress this Quickstrike edition in a black, sail and racer blue Air Jordan 1 colorway popularly known as “Royal.”
While its predecessor, the SB Dunk Low Elite, flaunted a shorter collar, this one had a high Flyknit cuff that doubles up as the sneaker’s full-length tongue. The Flyknit material was also utilized on the side panels to improve the shoe’s ventilation. Soon after, regular versions of this model were released to a larger population in “University Red,” “Sail/Binary Blue” and “Black/Dark Atomic Teal” hues.

Those who have tried it paired it with tees and hoodies as well as tapered jeans and cuffed joggers and ended up looking stylish.
Fit and Sizing
Expect this shoe to offer a supportive fit with its leather, synthetic material, and suede construction. The Flyknit collar, which gives a snug fit around the ankle and midfoot area, also helps keep the foot in place without the need to tighten the shoelaces. The Flyknit side panels allow the foot to breathe.
This men’s skate/lifestyle sneaker often runs true to length and is available in sizes 4-14.
Aside from its unique cuff that supplies increased ankle and board connection, the Nike SB Dunk High Elite is also recognized for its translucent outsole with forefoot flex grooves which provide flexibility. The outsole also reveals the renowned heel Zoom Air unit that offers responsive cushioning and lightweight impact protection.
- Comfort underfoot is improved with the addition of the foam sockliner.
- The heel and tongue pull tab is added for a quick and easy slip on/off.
- The Nike SB Dunk High Elite comes with extra laces that match the color of the upper.
- Lace-up closure enhances its fit.
- Apart from the “Swoosh” insignia on the sides, the “Nike SB” logo is also embossed on the undersole and the “DUNK Elite” callout is printed on the rear of the Flyknit collar for branding.
