Nike Mayfly Woven History
Mark Bowerman, co-founder of the global brand Nike, had a vision. He aimed to design and develop a runner that was light yet able to withstand an intense race from start to finish. That was it.
Thankfully, in the early 2000’s, a team that included Messrs Sean McDowell, Kevin Paulk, Tony Bignell and Jerry Crowley, all veterans in the design and development of running footwear, took the challenge. Finally, Bowerman’s vision materialized in the form of the Nike Mayfly.
Released in the year 2003, the shoe’s original design was drawn from an aquatic insect called the Mayfly, which relatively has a short lifespan. Similar to the Nike Mayfly, this athletic footwear was originally built as a cross-country race day shoe that expires after 100km of vigorous pavement pounding.
Crafted with a single piece nylon upper and a minimalist phylon sole, the shoe only weighed 135 grams. It was considered as one of the lightest creations of the brand. This inexpensive runner, however, caught the attention of shoe experts as well as collectors and unexpectedly turned into a lifestyle shoe.
Since its debut, this athletic footwear turned casual shoe has undergone many transformations. Among the most sought after is the Nike Mayfly Woven. Created in the year 2013, this iteration, made with a durable upper accented by woven detailing, not to mention a more resilient yet lightweight sole unit, was now built to last.
Breathable, ultralight and aesthetically-pleasing, this shoe has instantly captured the hearts of those who are on the lookout for versatile and unconventional silhouettes. This casual sneaker has also been outfitted with various materials and colors to meet modern-day consumers demands and needs.
Nike Mayfly Woven Style
Get noticed in an instant by pairing your favorite everyday clothes with the Nike Mayfly Woven. Available in neutral as well as bright colorways, this low-top sneaker’s uncommon yet attractive silhouette goes well with jeans and shorts, with or without socks.
This shoe, with its woven detailing and removable, padded footbed as well as its well-cushioned phylon midsole, also promises to keep your feet cool, dry and comfy all day long, even in scorching hot weather. Thereby making it a popular summer shoe.
Fit & Sizing
With a runner-inspired silhouette, expect this shoe to surround your feet in comfort 24/7. The Nike Mayfly Woven is available for both genders. Men’s sizes range from 4-13 while women’s sizes range from 5-12. Men’s versions generally run true to size, however, women’s models run about a half size smaller. Thus, the brand recommends for female purchasers to size up.
Although this shoe was manufactured with minimal branding, avid fans of Nike recognize the Mayfly Woven’s peculiar silhouette instantly even from afar for the handwoven detailing found on the upper’s entire length. Its upper can be made of premium or synthetic leather, or textile depending on the colorway.
- The shoe’s toe cap and tongue are perforated to improve airflow.
- Its durable rubber outsole offers reliable traction and grip.
- Optimal fit can be achieved with the Nike Mayfly Woven’s traditional lace-up closure, which includes waxed cotton laces.
- For added comfort, the shoe is lined with breathable mesh.
- Leather heel piece adds a premium look to the shoe’s already recognizable silhouette. It also enhances its durability.
- Subtle “Swoosh” logo can be found on the sneaker’s tongue and heel.
