Asics, the company that embodies the saying, ‘a healthy soul in a healthy body,’ is one of the leading purveyors of innovative and lasting performance shoe technologies. The elements featured in many of the shoes in its various rosters have proven heightened efficacy of the foot. Thus, bringing with them reliability that is oft-copied.

One of the features that stands out when it comes to Asics running shoes is the Gel®, a silicon-based piece that is usually wedged into the main cushioning unit of the midsole. The purpose of this add-on is to provide extra impact mitigation and structure to the underfoot experience. Running shoes with Asics Gel are all graced with these semitransparent pieces, and you’ll know that Gel® is present just in the name as it is incorporated there, as well.

Various iterations of Asics Gel® running shoes

Heel and/or forefoot Gel®

The most basic form of the Gel® in running shoes is the one that is incorporated directly into the foam midsole. This iteration of the silicon-derived piece can usually be seen completing the form of the heel part of the platform. When the overall design of the shoe calls for it, the forefoot section is also graced with Gel®, though it is hidden from view. Immediate support during the heel striking phase is established by the one in the rear, while additional springiness and propelling power are given by the one at the front.

360-degree Gel® wall

Neutral running shoes are usual as bare as they can be when it comes to their fundamental design. The belief that those with regular pronation of the foot can handle the nuances of taking each step when running fuels most shoe designs. But it certainly won’t hurt if additional support mechanisms are implemented in the midsole units of shoes. The 360-degree Gel® running shoe iteration involves a sidewall that reinforces the whole perimeter of the midsole, and it is tasked with supporting the entire stride, even the landing forces in the medial and lateral sections that are not usually addressed.

180-degree Gel® wall

Most road running shoes benefit from having midsole features that allow the foot to freely move through the gait cycle. But the 180-degree Gel® running shoes are meant to smoothen the heel-to-toe transitions as much as they permit natural motion. The J-shaped design of this accoutrement implies that it can cover the heel-strike, the rocker motion of the midfoot passage, and the gearing of the forefoot towards the toe-off.

Asics Gel Kayano

The Gel Kayano line of stability running shoes uses the rearfoot and forefoot Gel® units to maximize its capacity to stabilize the foot and keep it as comfortable as possible throughout the activity. While the cushioning system is filled with steadying features that promote a neutral stride, the impact-mitigating elements enable the perception of comfort and confident steps.

Asics Gel Quantum 180

The natural movement capacity of the foot deserves a midsole accoutrement that delivers all-around support. The 180-degree Gel® feature that is present is in the Gel Quantum 180 series takes into consideration the natural rolling motion of the foot as it goes through the act of taking each step. The slightly outward roll is accommodated by the J-shaped makeup of the Gel®.

Asics Gel Quantum 360

When the whole foot is buttressed by the midsole technologies and the Gel®, then you potentially get a step-in experience that is rife with high-tier comfort and security that lasts the entire day. Such a distinction is certainly the goal of the Asics Gel Quantum 360, a family of shoes that aims to handle speed training sessions, all-day use, and extended running events. The Gel® surrounds the midsole, and it’s meant to bolster all the goodness that comes with the presence of midsole foam.

Frequently asked questions

Do Gel® running shoes have inflexible underfoot platforms? Are they heavy?

Gel®, by itself, is not a heavy material. The piece is inherently lightweight and spongy, so it doesn’t make itself obvious as part of the package. Also, the platform’s flexibility is mostly determined by the density of the full-length foam and the presence/absence of flex grooves. If the running shoe has Gel® in the forefoot section, then it is strategically placed to preserve the natural bending capacity of the foam, thus maintaining the toe-off phase.

Do Gel® running shoes fundamentally affect the speed and quality of the running session and the performance of the foot?

While Gel® seeks to ease the landing phase of the step and potentially save the foot from discomfort, the quality of the performance still, like always, calls upon the runner’s capacities. This Asics technology isn’t a make-it-or-break-it feature nor a stability mechanism that anatomically corrects the pronation of the foot. Its job is to bolster impact mitigation and the structural integrity of the whole platform.
