I highly encourage you to put your foot into a Salomon shoe. If you're not used to them, this is a good one to, at least, demo.
I would call this a firm ride, not a soft ride when you get into it.
Snug in the midfoot, relaxed in the toe box, durable and good cushioning all make for a positive review. If you’re considering the S/LAB Ultra 2 know that the ride will lean towards the firm side but with lots of ground feel and protection.
These are great for long efforts and technical (non-wet!) trails, and I’d imagine they will last for many miles, which helps to offset the (IMO) steep price point at $180.
When you put this thing on, you feel ready to go.
You feel confident and fast. When you’re on pavement, it doesn’t feel slappy or out of place. It just works for a lot of different cases.
- The Salomon S-Lab Ultra 2 is a running shoe that’s designed for competitions that have ultra marathon distances. This product has a modernized look that accommodates both casual shoe enthusiasts and athletes who enjoy racing through the outdoor paths. The differences between this update and the original S-Lab Ultra model lies more on the aesthetic side, with the 2nd iteration utilizing more non-prominent printed overlays that move away from the thicker variant on the previous model.
- Underfoot cushioning is the responsibility of the EnergyCell™+, a full-length piece that is meant to attenuate impact shock and energize the toe-off phase. The compound is made to be durable enough to handle extended running sessions. The external pad is made of Contagrip® MA, a lug-filled rubber designed to handle wet and dry ground, as well as soft and rough surfaces.
A standard sizing scheme is used for the Salomon S-Lab Ultra 2. Runners can use their usual sizing expectations when deciding on a purchase. Still, it is worth noting that being able to welcome a secure in-shoe feel would require personally testing the shoe from brick-and-mortar stores.
When it comes to width, the available option is D - Medium. The S-Lab Ultra 2 is a unisex model, though it uses measurements that are typically for men. The women’s width equivalent is Wide. Too-wide foot dimensions may not enjoy the interior wrap, though the forefoot section has been widened to make way for the spreading of the toes.
The outsole unit of the Salomon S-Lab Ultra 2 is made of Contagrip® MA, a rubber compound that is ready to provide traction over the diverse types of ground pockmarking the great outdoors. This layer is also made to be durable enough to resist wear-and-tear.
Diamond-shaped gripping lugs protrude from the heel and forefoot sections. These nodes have the goal of heightening the quality of the grip, acting as clamps or claws that adhere to the ground and prevent slippage. Their tips are level to allow the shoe to transition to flat surfaces such as groomed trails.
The midsole unit of the Salomon S-Lab Ultra 2 is made of EnergyCell™+, a material that runs the entire length of the shoe. The purpose of this technology is to provide responsive cushioning for the whole foot. It has a sturdy construction which permits it to maintain its form, even after many uses. It attenuates impact shock and delivers a springy ride.
Placed above the main cushioning unit is a molded ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) insole. This add-on is created to give a soft underfoot experience that doesn’t affect the weight of the shoe nor the flexibility of the platform. It has curves which mimic the arch and other crevices of the foot-pad, thereby mildly supporting these usually neglected portions.
The upper unit of the S-Lab Ultra 2 is made of anti-debris mesh. This material has a multilayered construction to prevent trail debris from infiltrating the interior compartment. Furthermore, it has tiny breathing holes which permit the flow of air into, and through, the silhouette.
EndoFit™ is a smooth lining that graces the inner walls of this Salomon trail running shoe. The job of this technology is to hug the foot securely without irritating it or impeding breathability. It also evokes the feeling of having a second skin, mimicking the shape and motion of the foot as it goes through the gait cycle.
SensiFit™ is a system of overlays that bolster the structural integrity of the upper unit. These synthetic prints help the lacing system when it comes to locking the foot in place and preventing in-shoe wobbling.
The Quicklace™ system involves stretchy cords and a locking mechanism. The amalgamation of these elements results in a fit-adjustment method that doesn’t require the tradition of looping and tying shoelaces. A single pull would be enough to manipulate the tightness or looseness of the wrap. Quicklace™ is a staple in many Salomon running shoes, gracing popular models like the ones in the Salomon Speedcross line.
