New Balance 697 History
New Balance is one of the top players in the sneaker industry along with other footwear brand giants such as Nike, Adidas, Puma, Reebok, Keds, Converse, and Asics. It was founded by William J. Riley in 1906 initially as the “New Balance Arch Support Company” in Boston, Massachusetts.
As a brand that specializes in running shoes, New Balance currently produces other footwear categories including skate shoes, walking shoes, boots, hiking and trail shoes, training shoes, sneakers and more. One of the Boston-based brand’s current sneaker models is the New Balance 697.
The New Balance 697 is a women-exclusive running-inspired sneaker with a low-top construction, lace-up closure, REVlite midsole, and a suede and mesh combo on the upper. It has a slimmed-down retro silhouette inspired by New Balance’s most important running shoes during the ‘90s.
In February 2018, New Balance released the New Balance 697 Pastel Pack just in time for spring. The pack includes three pastel-based colorways of its 697 silhouette – the New Balance 697 “Moonbeam,” New Balance 697 “Pink,” and New Balance 697 “Silver Mint.” These colorways retail approximately at $110 for each pair.
New Balance 697 Style
The New Balance 697 is a women-exclusive running-inspired sneaker in a slimmed-down retro silhouette. Although the brand’s classic charisma is still evident, its exterior is enhanced with modern details that suit today’s sneaker fashion trends.
The upper is monochromatic (for most colorways) and dressed in a suede material with mesh underlays for that sporty and premium vibes. Subtle accents are in place, mostly through the N side panel branding and tongue depending on the colorway.
Fit & Sizing
These running-inspired New Balance sneakers are women-exclusive with sizes ranging from US 5 to 11 in B Medium or Standard width. Half sizes are also available. It features a low-top construction for flexible movement of the ankle and a traditional lace-up closure that secures the foot. Placed on the center of the tongue is an extra loop tab for the laces to loop through and give a much more secure and snug fit. Both the collar and tongue are sufficiently padded for added comfort. Overall hold and support are excellent.
The women’s 697 model from New Balance boasts a silhouette that took design inspirations from the running icons of the ‘90s era. It has a retro and slimmed-down style with a combination of durable suede and breathable mesh materials on the upper and a REVlite midsole for ultra-lightweight support.
