Best Reebok workout shoes for women - November 2018

Launched about 120 years ago in England, Reebok has come a long way to becoming a global manufacturer of athletic apparel and footwear. Despite being a subsidiary of Adidas, one of the grand sportswear industry leaders, Reebok still manages to uphold its self-sufficient reputation on the market.

In the past decade, the brand has been commonly associated with its official partnership with CrossFit, a branded fitness regimen and a competitive sport. The company has also established cooperation with Les Mills, an organization which has developed a broad array of fitness programs. In both partnerships, Reebok is committed to producing apparel and footwear dedicated to those particular types of physical activities.

Such orientation of the brand towards fitness and healthy lifestyle has also been reflected in its logo. In 2013, Reebok introduced a new Delta brandmark to represent its philosophy. The delta itself speaks for change, and its three sides stand for the three core elements of a successful self-change: physical, mental, and social.

With its well-rounded approach to fitness comes Reebok’s responsibility for creating appropriate gear. Along with the specialized CrossFit footwear, weightlifting trainers, and athletic walking shoes, the brand also offers a variety of shoes for daily workouts and studio sessions. We have gathered the latter under “Reebok workout shoes” to give you an overview of the respective trainers.

What to expect from the best Reebok workout shoes

Versatility

While some categories of shoes are crafted towards a specific type of activity or regimen, Reebok workout shoes are made to suit a vast range of exercises. They cater to agility and speed training, HIIT, cardio sessions, weightlifting, gym workouts, as well as aerobics and dance-based programs.

Unhindered movement

Lightweight. All Reebok workout shoes are created to have minimal weight so that the wearers don’t feel burdened by the footwear as they perform fast-paced exercises. The average weight of a men’s daily Reebok trainer comes between 270 and 320 grams per shoe. However, there are exceptions like the Trainfusion Nine 3.0 which is one of the brand’s most lightweight shoes at 170 grams per men’s trainer.

Flexible. It is crucial for a foot to be able to bend naturally throughout the workout session. That’s why Reebok makes sure that both the upper and the sole units are constructed with flexible materials. The soles, in particular, employ various flex grooves to keep up with both forward and side-to-side bending of an athlete’s foot.

Ankle freedom. Each pair of Reebok workout shoes features a low-cut upper design. It implies that the collar lies just below the ankle, allowing the foot to twist and turn without being restrained. It renders more freedom of movement and allows the foot to make quick transitions.

Spacious toe box. Workout shoes from Reebok are typically designed with a little more room in the forefoot area. This extra space provides toes with an ability to splay and wiggle which, in turn, renders comfort, better stability and an increased sense of control over the surface.

Support

Upper brace. Most Reebok workout shoes utilize a combination of engineered mesh, textile, and synthetic materials to give the foot a smooth and even support. The midfoot and heel sections are usually reinforced with thicker synthetic overlays to keep the foot stable during side-to-side movements and training with weights. The forefoot and collar areas are made with mesh to keep the foot fresh and aerated inside the shoe.

Underfoot support. Reebok trainers vary greatly in terms of components and technologies used to provide support and cushioning underneath the foot. However, they are all created to be lightweight and flexible, yet impact-ready. They absorb the shock associated with intensive workouts to protect the feet, legs, and lower back from discomfort and injuries. At the same time, they have the right level of firmness to keep the foot stable during weightlifting exercises.

In addition, the midsoles of all Reebok workout shoes are made relatively thin to keep the foot as close to the ground as possible while keeping it amply cushioned and protected. However, the drop (heel-to-toe differential) varies from model to model and solely depends on the wearer’s preference. The range goes from 6 to 13 mm, where with 6 mm your heel and toes will be placed nearly on the same level, while with 13 mm your heel will be noticeably elevated above the forefoot.

Traction

Finally, you would want to feel sure-footed and safe from slippage as you are going through an agile workout routine. A typical pair of Reebok workout shoes is equipped with a full-length rubber outsole with a lugged pattern to ensure grip on the polished gym and studio floors.

The origins of Reebok workout shoes

Reebok started out as a company that was predominantly focused on running footwear, but how did it end up among the pioneers of fitness trainers?

Let’s go back to the early 1980s for a moment. The time of the so-called “aerobics craze.” Women across the United States were mad keen on attending aerobics classes where small groups performed fun and energizing routines. Meanwhile, as the home video systems became more common, nearly every household had a VHS cassette with a series of Jane Fonda’s workouts. Flavor it all with jazzy, neon leotards, leg warmers, and elastic headbands, and you get the picture.

That was the moment when Reebok found it fit to introduce the first ever workout shoe, targeted specifically at the female audience. 1982 saw the release of the Reebok Freestyle, a soft, leather, high-cut trainer which was ready to accommodate all sorts of quick, multi-directional movements. How was the shoe taken? It ended up accounting for more than half of the brand’s sales at that time, and it didn’t take long before the trainer was seen on Jane Fonda’s feet in her new aerobics video. In fact, the public has grown on to the Freestyle so much that its silhouette has transitioned into several models of lifestyle sneakers, including Reebok Freestyle Hi, Reebok Freestyle Hi OG Lux, Reebok Freestyle Hi Spirit, among others.

Following the success of the shoe, Reebok soon found itself signing a contract with a professional fitness coach Gin Miller to promote its products. It also started sponsoring various workout programs and clinics as well as launching a workout campaign known as “Step Reebok” in 1989.

Notable collaborations

The company’s cooperation with CrossFit is undoubtedly among the most valuable partnerships for Reebok. Check out our ranking page dedicated to the trainers produced under this collaboration. Reebok CrossFit shoes are not covered in this article because they are created somewhat different than daily workout and studio shoes. Read on to find out more about the collaborations that are associated with Reebok workout shoes specifically.

Les Mills

Reebok’s active engagement in the world of healthy lifestyle movement reached a new level in 2013 when it entered into a partnership with Les Mills, an international fitness brand. Around the same time, Reebok introduced the new Delta logo to represent a well-rounded approach to personal development. This philosophy resonated well with Les Mills’ mission “to make the planet fitter.” It offers a range of fitness classes and HIIT workouts (i.e., Bodyattack, Bodycombat, Bodypump, Les Mills Barre, etc.) to appeal to the various needs and preferences of people and make them fall in love with exercising. As part of the agreement, Reebok committed to designing apparel and footwear for the regimens mentioned above as well as running marketing campaigns for Les Mills.

J. J. Watt

A Sportsperson of the Year 2017 according to Sports Illustrated, a triple AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and an outstanding American football defensive end for the Houston Texas. All of it and more describes the great J. J. Watt. His fierce dedication to sports and training despite getting seriously injured could not be left unnoticed by a major athletic brand like Reebok. The first product born out of this collaboration was Reebok JJ I trainer which was launched in July 2016.

The updated JJ II came out a year later, taking into account the drawbacks of the first iteration. The shoe was warmly welcomed by both training enthusiasts and athletes for the support and stability it offered during rigorous workouts. It was also found visually appealing and highly durable. While the shoe is only available in a men’s version, women can still benefit from the product by going down 1.5 size from their regular female size.

The fans were pleasantly surprised by the refreshed model of the trainer which arrived in August 2018. Referred to as the “Clean Slate,” the shoe is offered in an all-white colorway to represent Watt’s new beginning after getting over the injuries. The silver details on the tongue and collar stand for self-reflection, while the insole features an image of a yellow construction tape symbolizing the recovery process. Written on the tape is an encouraging statement: “Never let a stumble in the road be the end of the journey.”

Thread

Thread International is an organization which focuses on recycling plastic waste from Haiti and Honduras into an environmentally-friendly material for clothes and footwear. The Thread fabric, in particular, is by 50% comprised of recycled plastic bottles (PET) which are collected in Honduras. As part of its “Be More Human” campaign, Reebok partnered with the Thread International to encourage a more thoughtful approach to creating footwear and apparel. It took one of its prominent female workout shoes, the Guresu 1.0, as a basis for an environmentally-friendly model, called the Guresu Thread.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Reebok workout shoes for CrossFit?

A simple answer would be: it is not recommended. There is a good reason for why Reebok has a separate category for its CrossFit footwear. Daily workout trainers from Reebok are simply not designed to cope with the rigors of this constantly-varied regimen. The brand’s CrossFit shoes employ sturdier and more abrasion-resistant materials as well as extra reinforcements for rope climbing. They have a smaller heel-to-toe drop (3 to 4 mm) compared to Reebok workouts shoes (6 to 13 mm), which allows for a more grounded and stable underfoot experience. Also, the midsole unit is made firmer in CrossFit shoes to render stability during weightlifting exercises.

Can I run in daily workout shoes from Reebok?

Yes. Light jogging and short sprints can be performed in Reebok workout shoes as their midsole units are meant for repetitive impact. However, when it comes to marathon training or race competition, they may not prove to be as efficient and long-lasting as dedicated running footwear.

How much do Reebok workout shoes cost?

Reebok tends to keep the price tag of its trainers reasonable and affordable. A pair of well-performing workout shoes can be purchased within the range of $50 to $90 and even cheaper than that during sales. However, the shoes created under collaborations with celebrities or famous organizations come at a higher price, around $100 - $140.

How to ensure the right size and fit in Reebok workout shoes?

If you are ordering online, take your precise foot measurements first. It’s better to do at the end of the day when your feet have reached their maximum volume. Put on the socks which you are planning to wear with your future Reebok workout shoes and place one foot on a piece of paper. Draw a line at the most prominent part of your heel and another one over the longest toe. Measure the distance in inches and repeat the process for the other foot. It is normal if one foot turns out to be longer than the other one, just go with the bigger measurement. Check the Reebok size chart on the official brand website to find out your US, UK, or EU size.

As for the width, most Reebok workout shoes are offered in a standard D and B Medium width for men and women, respectively. If you tend to wear wide shoe profiles, check our selection of wide trainers. On the other hand, if you find the regular width too loose, be sure to give narrow workout shoes a try.

Check if a retailer allows free return of the product (like Amazon and Zappos). That way, you can order a few pairs to try them out in the privacy of your living room and with your outfits to see which one fits best. The remaining pairs can be returned free of charges.

Finally, when you try a shoe in person, make sure that there are no pinching or squeezing sensations in the upper unit. Neither should the trainer feel too loose or unsteady on the foot. Walk around to see if the heel is securely kept inside the footwear and the toes have ample space both in the front and on the sides to wiggle and splay naturally.

Are there any Reebok workout shoes for overpronation?

Unfortunately, no. As of now, Reebok workout shoes are only offered for a neutral gait.
