Initially produced for the 2008 Beijing Olympics as part of Nike Basketball’s Innovation program, the Nike Hyperdunk 08 makes a comeback; taking its iconic on-court style and adapting it to streetwear culture.
The Nike Hyperdunk 08 initiated a significant technological shift that started the trend of designing ultralight performance basketball sneakers. During its release, these basketball shoes were one of the lightest and introduced two of Nike’s most innovative technologies, Flywire and Lunar foam.
Cushion. The OG model of the Hyperdunk 08 features one of the innovations Nike developed specifically for the Olympics. Designed with the help of NASA engineers, Lunar foam is a high rebound, spongy, and resilient foam that is used in the seats of space shuttles.
To create Lunar foam, Nike combined EVA with Nitrate rubber. The result is a soft, bouncy, and responsive foam cushioning that is 30 percent lighter than Phylon with a cushioning feel that is almost comparable to Zoom Air.
Nike implemented the new foam in the shoe’s forefoot. In the heel, a large volume Zoom Air unit provides dynamic responsiveness and impact protection.
The other versions of the Nike Hyperdunk 08 Retro have a foam midsole that offers ultra-lightweight cushioning.
Traction. The Nike Hyperdunk 08 has a rubber outsole that features a pivot circle lined with herringbone and forefoot grooves for multidirectional traction and enhanced on-court grip.
Length and Width. Testers report that these Nike basketball shoes run true to size. Buyers are advised to order their actual size. However, whenever and wherever possible, it is still best to try the shoes in-store because it is a bit roomy inside.
Lockdown. Also making its debut in the Hyperdunk 08, Nike’s Flywire technology acts like cables on a suspension bridge.
Flywire consists of Vectran filaments that are strategically placed along the upper to offer lightweight support and containment precisely where it is needed.
As an added support feature, the Hyperdunk 08 has a high-top collar that ensures a locked-in fit, while a carbon fiber midfoot shank is present in the OG model.
The Nike Hyperdunk 08 has a synthetic leather upper for durability, TPU side panels for enhanced support, a cushioned collar for added comfort, and a Nike Tech Ultramesh tongue for breathability.
The originator of the Hyperdunk line returns just in time for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Made famous by USA’s Redeem Team during their gold medal run in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, these retro basketball shoes were also featured in the Rio Olympics.
The Nike Hyperdunk 08 Retro makes a bold comeback with a trio of vibrant monochromatic hues aptly called Solar Red, Photo Blue, and Volt.
