Updates to Asics Gel Sonoma 4

  • Asics presents the fourth iteration of the Gel Sonoma model, which the brand prides as a heavy-duty trail running shoe that could also work in versatility. Designed for neutral pronators, the Gel Sonoma 4 has a specific outsole design that gives the runner more control on the trails.
  • While the upper may not have a big difference compared to its previous version, the Gel Sonoma 4 features a slight redesign that offers a more comfortable than before. The new design is also more breathable as there is now a more significant area of mesh coverage.
  • Another significant update in the Gel Sonoma 4 is the introduction of the Amplifoam midsole, which aims to give the foot ample cushioning and protection, especially on ever-changing terrain, ensuring comfort and versatility where needed.

Size and fit

Like the previous versions of the Asics Sonoma, this fourth release is built following a standard running shoe scheme. The shoe features a silhouette that enables a wide toe splay and a snug midfoot for a comfortable yet secure fit. In addition, the shoe also possesses a semi-curved shape that mimics the figure of the human foot. The Gel Sonoma 4 is available in D - Medium and 4E - Extra Wide for the men’s version, while the women’s version has B - Medium, and D - Wide.

The outsole of the Asics Gel Sonoma 4 uses the brand’s own Trail-Specific design. In this feature, the lugs of the outsole have a reversed orientation, which enhances the traction as the foot runs in both uphill and downhill direction. The Trail-Specific Outsole also gives the runner more control while navigating the rugged terrain. The Gel Venture 6, also a trail running shoe from the brand, has the same outsole structure.

For the midsole of the Gel Sonoma 4, the Amplifoam technology is utilized. The Amplifoam comes in the form of a unique material that is designed to provide a soft cushioning but without the density of a plush foam. The components of the Amplifoam allow the Gel Sonoma 4 to be softer, more flexible, and more comfortable than basic midsole foams. Such a structure makes this running shoe ideal for daily running.

Accompanying the Amplifoam, located on the heel of the midsole, is the Gel Cushioning System. This piece of shoe technology is well-known for its shock attenuating quality and its ability to enable a smooth transition in each stride. Its location in the rearfoot allows the Gel Cushioning System to soften the impact from heel strike and add bounce to the step.

An Ortholite sockliner completes the midsole componentry of the Gel Sonoma 4. This feature promotes efficient management of moisture around the foot, keeping it dry, clean, and odor-free.

The breathable mesh upper of the Asics Gel Sonoma 4 equips the shoe with both comfort and durability for an enjoyable and hassle-free run. The mesh is supported by Asics’ signature midfoot overlays made from synthetic material, which help in providing foot support and maintaining structural integrity.

Beneath the mesh is an internal fabric lining that ensures a comfortable in-shoe feel as it strives to prevent skin irritation. It also aids the mesh in providing ample ventilation to the inside of the shoe.

Meanwhile, the Gel Sonoma 4 also equips the collar and tongue with cushioning to sustain the comfort level of the foot, thus further amplifying the comfort level of this trail running shoe.
