NikeCourt Air Zoom Vapor X Clay (also known as Vapor 10 Clay) picks up the dynamic qualities of the hard-court version but in a clay-specific sole. Resembling the other Vapor X shoes, this profile features Nike’s Dynamic Fit system that grants a foot-hugging feel. Another source of support is the heel-to-toe TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) foot frame.
These combined specs encourage users to have full control of the game even during abrupt stops and aggressive moves. Like the other trainers under the Zoom Air lineup, this footgear is also packed with the shock-absorbing pressurized air in the heel. Simply put, the Vapor X Clay offers lightweight responsiveness without limiting on comfort and stability.
Design. Nike innovated the design of the Vapor series by adding a noticeably large Swoosh branding on the entire outsole of the Vapor 10 Clay. It features a full-length herringbone pattern that keeps the player connected on the clay surface.
Enhanced traction. Traction is added around the outsole’s perimeter to establish strong foothold. This design allows the user to confidently zoom around the court while staying stable and maintaining balanced footing.
Lightweight cushioning. Nike’s lightest performance foam called Phylon takes up the entire midsole. This spongy element is made up of compressed EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) foam pellets. Such cushioning property is soft but not too squashy.
Responsive unit. The Nike Zoom Air is embedded in the heel to provide added shock absorption and responsive cushioning. It’s a technology developed by the Swoosh brand for its top speed shoes. Zoom Air is composed of a chamber with pressurized air and tightly stretched tensile fibers. These properties compress and buffer the foot from the impact before they spring back to their original state.
Supportive midfoot. The TPU shank planted under the arch of the foot is intended to keep the player stable. It reduces the chances of unnecessary ankle rotation while allowing the forefoot to flex during rallies and multi-directional movements.
Lightweight. The outer membrane is made up of synthetics with mesh in a lightweight package. The lightness of the upper grants the aggressive players the freedom to exhibit their speedy moves on clay without getting weighed down by their shoe.
Breathability. One of the plus factors of this shoe is its use of an adequately ventilated mesh cover. This material helps reduce the possibility of getting the foot toasty, especially since clay matches are slow-paced.
Fit. Aside from the TPU midfoot shank, much of the support is anchored on the proprietary Dynamic Fit system. This technology is made up of a soft and flexible material that wraps the midfoot and arch, just like fingers. Its makeup gives out a glove-like fit that can be customized by cinching up the laces. This tight-fitting attribute reduces the chances of having dirt and fine particles going into the shoe.
Comfort. The collar is padded, which works as an added support as it helps spread the pressure from the foot.
- Some of the pro athletes who’ve shown support for the Vapor X series are Grigor Dimitrov, Borna Coric, Daniil Medvedev, Karen Khachanov, Kyle Edmund, Jack Sock, Juan Martin Del Potro, to name a few.
- Another variation of the Air Zoom Vapor 10 is the Nike Air Zoom Vapor 10 Glove Clay, which has the same features as the Vapor X Clay except for the addition of a neoprene-like shroud with zipper.
- The Zoom Air feature was initially used in running shoes and soon utilized in other performance footwear for training, basketball, baseball, among others.
