Overview of this review
Good to know
Just like its Dunk Low and Dunk High cousins, the SB Dunk Mids are liberally padded from the forefoot, tongue, collar to the heel, and underfoot. With its stuffed makeup, these kicks are made to be snugged to keep one's foot secure during extremely challenging tricks.
The standard lace-up design and added Velcro tightening strap help lock the foot down. These are among the mid-top sneakers that come in men's sizes; however, women skaters are not restricted from grabbing these SB Dunks. They simply need to size down by 1.5 to obtain the appropriate size.
Made for skateboarding, mid-top SB Dunks are ready for the abrasive street sport with its reinforced segments. Its premium-grade cover puts a classy and stylish spin to casual wear like a pair of joggers and track pants, which makes it wearable even on days you feel like parking your boards.
Durability, security, and comfort are the three takeaway benefits of these Nike SB Dunk Mids. Aside from the thickly padded interior, these sneakers are put together employing double stitching around the upper to prevent it from breaking away easily. On the flip side, it's presented with a high-wearing rubber sole that comes with a tread pattern offering optimal grip advantage.
At the midsole, these skate shoes are engineered with a cup sole that cushions the foot and prevents underfoot bruises. Some variations are equipped with a pressurized Zoom Air cushioning unit that dampens the shock during landings. All these features allow skaters to stick to their tricks than their kicks.
Nike Skateboarding dropped an in-between height to the highly iconic Nike Dunk. Nike SB Dunk Mid colorways come in fewer options compared to the kilometric list of designs accorded for the more popular Nike SB Dunk High and Nike SB Dunk Low. However, the mid-tops have found a solid fanbase among Nike SB followers.
The Swoosh label started popping out fresh updates of the Nike SB Dunk Mid after its drop of the sensational Peacock Dunk in 2007. The shoe was inspired by the peacock colors imprinted on the bottle of 4711 Kölnisch Wasser cologne. Like the high- and low-top counterparts, the mids are designed with a noticeable strap across the tongue. This signature element was removed from the SB Dunk Mid models and collabs unveiled in 2011 as they came out with lace closure all the way through. The strap was subsequently brought back in 2012. More hyped-up colorways were dropped afterward.
Nike SB Dunk Mid Orange Label
Skate shops were instrumental in the popularity of Nike SB in the skateboarding community. To pay homage to the US-based skate outlets, the Beaverton-company unveiled the SB Dunk Mid Orange Label collection in April 2019, consisting of hyped-up designs. The shoe is made of a luxurious nubuck cover that feels smooth to the touch and holds up by a gum sole for grip. You'll know that Nike put a lot of love into it by wrapping the aglets in flashy red with Nike SB and Swoosh markings. These skate kicks were made available exclusively in select skate retailers.
Nike SB Dunk Mid "Griffey Jr"
A year later, the brand released the SB Dunk Mid's Freshwater colorway as a tribute to baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr. This design took cues from 1996 Nike Air Griffey Max 1, Griffey's first signature silhouette that's dressed in the same colorway. The SB Dunk Griffey is dressed with an identical colorway as the Air Max version, mainly in a turquoise body, black overlays, and white detailing. The number "58" stamped on the velcro strap instead of Griffey's number 24 is guessed by many as a numerical representation of "SB." Some fanatics think it's a reference to Nike SB's series of UK-wide and US interstate 58 tours that had tie-ups with skate shops.
- The Nike SB Dunk Mids are available with an alternative set of laces.
- Nike Dunks first surfaced in 1985 as a basketball shoe that eventually transcended other sports.
