Size and fit

The Air Shake Ndestrukt wraps the foot snugly with its all-leather shroud that’s connected to an asymmetrical, well-constructed lacing design on the medial side. The Velcro strap on the medial ankle area provides a more lockdown fit. The padded shroud is soft which keeps the foot comfortable. The rand that runs along the middle of the shoe is durable for better support; and the perforations on the upper offer the needed air ventilation.

This shoe generally runs true to size. And for those who need a roomier feel may go half a size bigger than their standard size. This mid-cut sneaker is available in men’s sizes from 7 to 15 US and in medium width.

Nike Air Shake Ndestrukt Style

The Air Shake Ndestrukt remains as bold and unique as the person who made this shoe famous back in the mid-1990s, no less than The Worm himself, Dennis Rodman. This retro-style sneaker is an attention-grabber with its uniquely designed lacing system, oversized Swoosh and ribbed shroud, which comes dressed in more variety of colors than it was back in the 1990s. Its sporty allure goes well with shorts and jersey bottoms for indoor or outdoor ball games, as well as joggers and tapered pants for casual affairs.

Notable Features

The Air Shake Ndestrukt, originally released in 1996, is just as colorful and unique as the icon behind this retro sneaker, Dennis Rodman. Aside from this shoe’s noticeable and chunky elements from the Swoosh branding on the upper to the ribbed materials that cover the foot, sneaker lovers are drawn to its uniquely-designed lacing system that does not run along on the upper but on the medial side.

Nike Air Shake Ndestrukt History

Nike opened its basketball vault and in the Spring of 2017 re-dropped one of its 1990s legends, the Air Shake Ndestrukt. Instantly, this sneaker with a famous asymmetrical lacing system and gigantic Swoosh across its shroud gave NBA fans, sneaker aficionados, and Dennis Rodman followers a blast from the past.

First in the lineup from a series of drops was the original Chicago Bulls-inspired colorway, followed by the Black/Black, and the White/Black-Blue, while new interesting colors such as White/White, Gym Red/Summit White/Port/Gym Red, among others are also made available.

The return of this hoops shoe initially created as an outdoor game sneaker, relives that moment in the NBA 1996 season when three Chicago Bulls top dogs were seen on the hard court blazing in their Nike weapons. Fresh from his first NBA retirement was Michael Jordan in his Air Jordan XI, point forward Scottie Pippen donned in the Nike Air More Uptempo, and fierce forward Dennis Rodman in Air Shake Ndestrukt.

It was said that among the three sneakers, the underrated one is the eccentric looking Black/White mid-top Air Shake Ndestrukt. This was the weapon worn by The Worm, a moniker for Rodman, en route to the ’96 NBA Championship. Incidentally, the Chicago Bulls emerged as the NBA champion that season, while Rodman possessed his title the Rebound Leader for the fourth time.

Needless to say, Rodman upstaged his opponents with his killer power forward moves and rebounding tactics that season with a dependable pair of equipment in his foot, the Air Shake Ndestrukt.

Rodman is one of the most celebrated athletes on the court. Aside from the Worm, he’s also known as the Dennis the Menace, an athlete branded for his unorthodox behaviors, wild sense of style, an unusual habit of re-dyeing his hair several times a month, and attention-grabbing style of game. These bold characteristics of Rodman were the basis of Eric Avar when he conceptualized the equally bizarre-shaped mid-cut Air Shake Ndestrukt.

The original version of this Ndestrukt version had an oversized Swoosh logo overlapping a shroud that covers its entire upper. Another large branding can be seen on the flip side of the shoe in the heel region. These elements were matched with the most recognizable unusual lacing system on the medial side. Avar succeeded in making this shoe a head turner with its predominantly leather, chunky profile that’s glaring with king-size features.

The technical detailing of the shoe was inspired by the Tinker Hatfield-designed Air Jordan XI, which was made of patent leather and turned out to be one of the extremely famous silhouettes in the Jordan series.

The lacing concept of the Air Shake Ndestrukt was lifted from the 1996 ubiquitous runners, the Nike Air Footscape and Nike Air Stasis which had side lacing system. The lace design along the side is one of the concepts derived from analyzing the kinematics and natural profile of the foot conducted by the Nike Sports Research Lab and the Advanced Product Engineering Group.

After two decades from the time the Air Shake Ndestrukt was first unveiled, this popular shoe returned in OG and various colorways. This sneaker will always be one of Nike’s bold concepts for an outdoor performance shoe. Certainly, this one-of-a-kind silhouette will remain a conversation piece, a wearable art, and a fashion statement that fits any era where eclectic sports fashion is much appreciated.

Additional Info

  • Apart from the most recognizable Swoosh logos on the upper and outsole, the heel panel has an embroidered branding which is said to be associated with the legendary NBA athlete Dennis “The Worm” Rodman. The image is an impression of a worm surrounding a stitched figure of a basketball.
  • The Velcro strap on the medial ankle side has a grinding gear symbol with a small Swoosh across it. In the early 1990s, Nike came out with a series of “for outdoor use only” sneakers. In 1995, the brand named this outdoor line the Ndestrukt, built for the rugged surfaces. It kicked off with the drop of the ball shoe Air Ndestrukt which had the gear symbol on the outsole.  There were also other Ndestrukt shoes constructed for tennis and trail-running categories.
  • With outdoor games in mind, the Air Shake Ndestrukt is made of a durable outsole.
  • The original Air Rattle Ndestrukt and Air Roll Ndestrukt were also dropped in 1996 which was constructed with the rugged overlays but had the traditional lacing system and tongue combo. The outsole of these versions was made with durable rubber compound built for outdoor games.
