Salomon is one of the biggest and most respected names in outdoor footwear, with an extensive lineup that spans the road running, trail running, and hiking categories. The XA Pro 3D, now in its 8th iteration, slots in as a nice crossover design: a shoe that’s built for technical trail running but that works well for fast-and-light hiking. We put the XA Pro 3D to the test in rugged Patagonia, where it struck us as protective and well-cushioned for carrying a pack over long distances but felt overbuilt for running. Below we break down the Salomon XA Pro 3D’s hiking comfort, weight, traction, stability and support, durability, fit, and more. The Salomon XA Pro 3D V8 is a highly durable running shoe built for running on technical trails. It features premium materials designed to enhance speed and comfort. This updated version is made lighter and softer compared to its previous versions.

This Salomon trail running shoe now utilizes a thinner and softer mesh top. The 3D Chassis™ is also included for superior stability. The new geometry of the 3D Chassis™ is used to deliver just the right amount of stability and cushioning for a stable ride.

The 8th version of the XA Pro 3D features the SensiFit™ and Quicklace™ system. These components are designed to provide a secure and customized fit. Other elements that affect the quality of the fit are the padded tongue and sockliner. These features are used to deliver maximum comfort and protection.

The Contagrip® MA outsole is integrated into the XA Pro 3D V8 for full premium wet traction. The rubber outsole is made from a highly durable rubber compound that protects the platform from all abrasive elements. This material balances the geometry and rubber compound to deliver an enhanced grip on both dry and wet surfaces.

The 3D Chassis™ is positioned between the midsole and outsole. This element optimizes motion control and energy management. It also gives added protection for a more stable and responsive ride.

For shock attenuation, the EnergyCell midsole is integrated into the shoe. This midsole technology is made from a high-performance EVA foam, which offers exceptional energy return and cushioning without compromising durability.

Providing exceptional cushioning is the OrthoLite® insole. It is placed above the EnergyCell midsole to upgrade the comfort and performance of the platform. The molded insole contours to the foot for a personalized cushioning. This element also improves the shoe’s breathability and durability. The OrthoLite® insole is also featured in other Salomon running shoes like the Salomon Speedcross 5.

The stitch-free upper construction helps provide a smooth, glove-like feel. The upper utilizes the 3D open Mesh for maximum breathability. It permits continuous airflow to keep the foot dry and cool for an extended period.

SensiFit™ technology cradles the foot from the midsole to the lacing system for added support. The SensiFit™ and Quicklace™ system are working together to provide a secure and customized fit around the foot.

The Quicklace™ incorporates minimalistic and strong laces that allow for easy on and off. A lace pocket is also included as easy storage for the Quicklace™ lacing system. To protect the foot from getting pinched by the shoelaces, a padded tongue is utilized. The tongue is also a contributor to achieving a snug and comfortable in-shoe feel.

For added protection and durability, a protective toecap is used. It is made from a piece of synthetic material placed over the toe area. It protects the toes from sharp objects and other abrasive elements.
