Though most retail stores closed in 2020 because of the COVID-19 impact, the athletic apparel industry was not badly impacted along with the footwear industry because of online shopping and the growing interest in home workouts.

  • Before the global pandemic, the global sports apparel market size is expected to grow from $167.7 billion in 2018 to $248.1 billion in 2026, at a compound annual growth rate of 5.1%
  • During the forecast period, the fitness clothing industry for:
    • women is projected to grow at an annual rate of 5.6%
    • men is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.6%
  • Athletic apparel aims to wick sweat faster and feels light n the skin and is usually made from:

  • Europe exported fashion sportswear worth $13.3 billion which it sold to consumers in the US, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Russia, Korea, Turkey, Canada, UAE, and Ukraine
  • The biggest exporter of fashion sports apparel include:
    • Italy - $2.8 billion
    • Germany - $2.4 billion
    • France - $1.5 billion)
    • The Netherlands - $1.3 billion)
    • Spain $1.2 billion
    • Belgium - $1 million
  • As for imported sportswear, it accounted for 16% of Europe's total revenue from fashionable athletic wear
    • China, Bangladesh and Vietnam account for 35% of Europe's imported trendy sportswear
  • In the UK, the sportswear industry is expected to grow 20.9% between 2018 to 2023

Asia Pacific

  • The sportswear industry in Asia is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7% between 2019 and 2024
  • The combined revenue of athleisure and athletic footwear is expected to increase by 18.5% year, reaching a market value of $193.3 billion by 2023
