KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite: análisis y review

After testing it on the road and putting it through our lab, we believe the KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite is:

• A great choice for runners looking for a more approachable super shoe with outstanding outsole durability.
• Ideal for runners who already trust Decathlon products and want to experience KIPRUN's marathon shoe.
• Amazing for midfoot and forefoot strikers seeking a stable racing shoe.

While the KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite does not have any major dealbreakers, we think it's not the best choice for runners who obsess over weight. At 7.7 oz (218g), we found it noticeably heavier than elite racing options like the ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo or the Nike Vaporfly 4.

We also think that runners chasing the absolute highest energy return may want to look elsewhere. The Fastech+ midsole delivers solid rebound and a highly-efficient ride, but we found in the lab that it still falls one step short of the top performance offered by shoes such as the adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 and the Saucony Endorphin Elite 2.

KIPRUN positions the Kipstorm Elite as a marathon-focused racer, and our lab results fully support that claim. Measuring 148 SA in the heel and 126 SA in the forefoot, this shoe delivers exceptional impact protection, helping reduce stress on joints and muscles from the opening miles all the way to the finish line.

Decathlon is following a similar strategy with KIPRUN to the one it successfully used in cycling with Van Rysel, aiming to compete directly with the industry's biggest names. In our view, achieving that goal in the racing category requires a midsole capable of delivering top-tier energy return.

The PEBA and A-TPU combination used in the Kipstorm Elite produces impressive rebound numbers, reaching 68.9% in the heel and 74.8% in the forefoot. However, based on our findings, these results still fall slightly short of the bounce delivered by the top super shoes on the market, leaving some room for further improvement.

We measured 38.1 mm of foam in the heel, placing the KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite just 1.9 mm below the 40 mm stack-height limit established by World Athletics for road racing.

This is exactly what we expect from a marathon-focused super shoe. By maximizing midsole volume, KIPRUN provides ample cushioning to keep legs fresher and more efficient deep into the race.

We also classify the Kipstorm Elite as a max-stack shoe in the forefoot. Our digital calipers returned 31.4 mm of stack height in this area. However, our measurement came in slightly below Decathlon's stated 34 mm figure.

The slightly lower-than-expected forefoot stack brings a direct consequence here: the drop is also a bit higher than what we found in the spec sheet. The difference is minor, increasing from the stated 5 mm to 6.7 mm in our measurements.

In our opinion, this drop works perfectly for the Kipstorm Elite. Anything lower could make the shoe less accommodating for heel strikers, while its geometry and rocker design do not call for a higher drop either.

We discovered that the Kipstorm Elite features a dual-foam setup named Fastech+, combining two of the three most sought-after compounds available in 2026: PEBA and A-TPU. Using our Asker C durometer, we measured the softness of the main PEBA layer that goes on top of the carbon plate at 34.5 AC. In our view, this places it right in the middle of the spectrum, delivering a balanced feel that is neither exceptionally plush nor overly firm. 

However, the shoe feels slightly softer on foot than that initial measurement suggests. That's because KIPRUN paired the PEBA layer with a secondary A-TPU foam that noticeably smooths out the ride, and our durometer confirmed its softer nature with a reading of 27.2 AC.

Looking at the side profile of the KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite, two things immediately stand out: it looks absolutely stunning, and it features a remarkably aggressive geometry.

The heel bevel is exceptionally pronounced, while the forefoot rocker starts fairly late before rising nearly 5 cm, creating a design clearly engineered to encourage rapid transitions and powerful toe-offs.

Another feature that immediately caught our attention is the carbon plate. Up to the midfoot, it follows a fairly conventional super-shoe design. However, the forefoot tells a different story, as the plate first dips downward before curving sharply upward near the toe.

This highly-aggressive shape appears engineered to maximize leverage during toe-off, creating a more pronounced rolling sensation that, in our view, works best for midfoot strikers.

KIPRUN already proved that it can deliver impressive midsole technology, but fit remains just as important for many runners. After all, in a marathon, each foot can strike the ground more than 15,000 times, making a well-fitting shoe essential for both comfort and efficiency over the full distance.

Our first measurement focused on forefoot width, where the Kipstorm Elite reached 95.6 mm. According to our lab data, this places it above most competing super shoes. But let's take another one.

The second measurement reveals a noticeably tapered toebox, coming in at just 69.7 mm. While this is a common trait among race-day shoes, it's still worth considering, especially if you're planning to use the Kipstorm Elite not only for racing but also for tempo workouts and fast-paced long runs.

Our final fit measurement focused on toebox height.

In this area, we recorded 26.8 mm. We believe that this level of vertical space should prevent excessive pressure on the toes, even during marathon efforts lasting two or three hours.

A few years ago, brands could get away with mediocre traction in super shoes because the competition was less intense, but that's no longer the case. KIPRUN clearly understood this, equipping the Kipstorm Elite with a highly-grippy outsole that achieved an outstanding 0.71 score in our test.

As a result, this shoe inspires confidence even when race conditions turn wet, making it a strong option for rainy races.

The outsole mirrors the aggressive character of the Kipstorm Elite, featuring a striking midsole cutout that exposes the carbon plate.

Rubber coverage is kept to a minimum to save some weight, yet KIPRUN placed it strategically in the highest-wear zones to maintain traction and durability where they matter most.

Due to its towering midsole and stiff carbon plate, the Kipstorm Elite registered 21.4N in our 30-degree bend test.

This result came as no surprise and perfectly matches what we experienced during testing, as the shoe delivers an exceptionally rigid ride with virtually no flexibility underfoot.

We found the Kipstorm Elite to be one step behind the very best super shoes in terms of energy return, and a similar conclusion applies to its weight. Our scale showed 7.7 oz (218g), which is still a respectable result for a first-generation marathon racer.

In our view, this weight will have little impact for most runners and remains perfectly suitable for long-distance racing. However, athletes chasing every possible second on race day may gravitate toward some of the featherweight options from other brands.

While most brands rely on engineered mesh for their competition shoes, KIPRUN chose a seamless knit upper for the Kipstorm Elite. We found that it wraps the foot exceptionally well and feels like another major step forward for the brand.

From a breathability standpoint, it performs remarkably well. During our test, smoke escaped through the upper with ease, earning the Kipstorm Elite a perfect 5/5 score.

With the exception of the large K logo, which also serves a functional purpose by adding structure and support, the rest of the upper is incredibly thin and minimalist.

Our microscope analysis reinforced that positive impression. We identified numerous small ventilation openings that promote airflow, and the overall build quality appeared excellent throughout the upper.

The heel features a distinctive padding layout that may not suit every runner, as we know some athletes are sensitive to this type of lateral heel cushioning.

For midfoot and forefoot who find most super shoes a bit unstable, the KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite stands out as an interesting option. We found that its wider-than-average platform in these areas creates a naturally stable base, while the rigid carbon plate further enhances control by limiting excessive movement during the stride.

We verified the rigidity of the entire system using our custom-built machine, which twists the shoe in both directions to measure resistance. The Kipstorm Elite proved notably rigid, requiring 16.0 Nm of force to complete the test.

The heel counter offers some flexibility, though not as much as many competing super shoes. In our assessment, it earned a 2/5 score, delivering a slightly more structured feel around the rearfoot.

Here's one of the key reasons behind the stable ride of the Kipstorm Elite. At 118.8 mm wide, its forefoot platform is nearly as broad as what we typically see in some super trainers, a design choice that may divide opinions among runners.

Those who appreciate extra support and dislike the unstable sensation found in some super shoes—such as the PUMA Fast-R Nitro Elite 3—will likely find this design appealing. However, runners seeking the most nimble and aggressive race-day experience may prefer a narrower and more agile platform.

As you can see in our photo, the heel does not expand too much, giving the Kipstorm Elite a distinctly aggressive appearance from the rear. There's relatively little platform width in this area, and our calipers measured just 81.6 mm.

Despite using an exceptionally thin material in the toebox, the Kipstorm Elite earned a 2/5 score in our first Dremel test. While that's certainly below average and not a standout result, we believe it's a reasonable outcome considering how lightweight and race-focused the upper is.

The heel padding earned a 3/5 score in our Dremel test. While that's slightly below average, we don't view it as a concern for this shoe.

While we were pleased with most of the Kipstorm Elite's lab results, the outsole was the component that truly stood out.

Combining excellent grip with just 0.4 mm of wear in our Dremel test, it delivered a truly awesome performance that ranks among the very best we've seen in a super shoe.

Decathlon's designers opted for a generous 2.5 mm layer of rubber, reinforcing the idea that the Kipstorm Elite is not intended solely for race day.

In our view, this choice will appeal to runners looking to use the shoe for key workouts and long runs as well, as it appears fully capable of handling substantial mileage.

As is common with many super shoes, the Kipstorm Elite uses a thin insole (3.0 mm) to maximize the amount of midsole foam while staying within World Athletics regulations.

If you prefer to remove the insole, you'll be glad to know that it isn't glued to the strobel board. However, doing so means giving up the subtle perforations built into the insole, which help enhance the shoe's overall breathability.

The premium foams used in the Kipstorm Elite's midsole proved remarkably resistant to cold temperatures. After spending 20 minutes in our freezer, the foam firmed up by just 7%, an outstanding result that highlights the temperature consistency of this high-end setup.

The KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite is one of the very few super shoes we've tested that includes reflective elements, a rare feature in this category that adds a welcome touch of visibility.

We really liked the hidden eyelet chain of the Kipstorm Elite. It creates a clean look that looks amazing. The same can be said for the toothed laces, which provide excellent lace retention and further elevate the overall experience. In our opinion, KIPRUN nailed this part of the design.

The tongue also delivers more comfort than what we usually find in race-day shoes, measuring 4.4 mm thick in our caliper test. It's one of several areas where we feel KIPRUN prioritized comfort over chasing the lowest possible weight.

Unlike most super shoes that use a fully detached tongue, KIPRUN anchored the tongue near the top to create a more integrated fit. This approach delivers a secure, sock-like feel reminiscent of models such as the Nike Alphafly 3.

The heel features a striking tab that extends toward the Achilles tendon, further emphasizing the Kipstorm Elite's aggressive design language with its sharp lines and angular shape.

KIPRUN is no longer positioning itself as a brand focused solely on the budget segment, and the Kipstorm Elite is clear evidence of that ambition. Priced alongside flagship models from the industry's biggest names, this shoe represents a bold move from Decathlon as it aims to compete directly in the premium racing category.

Whether runners will be willing to choose KIPRUN over established options from Nike, Adidas, or ASICS remains an open question for now. However, one thing is certain: with the Kipstorm Elite, KIPRUN has entered a completely different league.
