The Altra Experience Wild 3 is a clear step forward for the series, and we proved that Altra has addressed several of the issues we found in version 2. The biggest upgrade is the Vibram Megagrip outsole on the 3+ variant, which impressed us during testing with its excellent grip and durability, and should be the standard for every Wild. We also appreciated the more refined design, improved fit, and better overall construction. That said, we believe the shoe is still far from reaching its full potential, and we'd like to see Altra reduce its weight and introduce a bouncier foam in version 4.

Pros

  • Excellent traction (Vibram version)
  • Roomy toebox allows toes to spread
  • Breathable mesh keeps air flowing
  • Flexible construction
  • Fully gusseted tongue
  • Improved midsole from v2
  • Heel loop and velcro gaiter attachment
  • Versatile lug design
  • Softer midsole delivers more comfort
  • Low drop appeals to midfoot-first runners

Contras

  • Vibram version costs more than predecessor
  • Should be a bit lighter
  • Foam still lacks exciting rebound
  • Limited stability for heel strikers

Who should buy

In our opinion, the Altra Experience Wild 3 is a great match for trail runners who:

  • Enjoyed previous Wild models but wanted better traction and a more refined overall design.
  • Land on their forefoot or midfoot and prefer a dependable trail shoe with a low heel-to-toe drop.
  • Have wide feet and need a roomy toebox that allows their toes to spread naturally.

Who should NOT buy

Runners expecting a zero-drop shoe will be disappointed, as the Experience line doesn't follow Altra's traditional flat-midsole design and it's our job to help runners avoid buying the wrong shoe. If you're looking for a true zero-drop experience, we strongly recommend the Lone Peak 9 instead.

We also believe the underwhelming energy return of the EGO P35 midsole could be a dealbreaker for runners seeking a more exciting ride. If that's your priority, we suggest checking out the Saucony Xodus Ultra 4 or Nike ACG Zegama Trail instead.

Shock absorption

Disclaimer: We tested the Altra Experience Wild 3+, the version that features a Vibram outsole. In this review, we refer to the shoe as the Altra Experience Wild 3.

The Altra Experience Wild 3 delivered 125 SA in the heel and 98 SA in the forefoot in our shock absorption test. Neither result strays far from average, giving this model a fairly conventional level of impact cushioning for everyday trail training.

This is consistent with what we found in the Experience Wild 2, which delivered nearly identical results in the same test.

Energy return

EGO P35 is a welcome midsole upgrade, although our rebound results put its performance into perspective. We measured 53.0% energy return in the forefoot and just 45.9% in the heel, with both figures falling below average.

However, forefoot energy return has improved substantially compared to the Wild 2. That's a welcome step forward, but we proved that it says more about the poor bounce of its predecessor than about this foam being truly energetic.

We measured 29.9 mm here, short of Altra's advertised 32 mm and below average for a trail shoe. This is a relatively modest platform under the heel, despite the generous amount of foam visible around its edges.

The forefoot also came in below the official specification, although for many Altra fans this could be welcome news. We measured 24.7 mm against Altra's stated 28 mm, leaving less material beneath the toes than the official spec sheet promises.

Drop

Altra's Experience range brings a small heel lift to a brand famous for zero-drop shoes. This model is advertised at 4 mm, although our measurements produced a slightly higher 5.2 mm.

We still see a relatively low offset, but runners expecting the foot to sit level should look elsewhere in Altra's lineup.

Dureza de la mediasuela

We pressed our Asker C durometer into the EGO P35 midsole and found 32.5 AC, a softer-than-average result. There's a clear difference between this compliant foam and the firmer compounds used in Altra shoes from the past.

Cold-weather consistency was encouraging too. After 20 minutes in the freezer, the foam became just 10% firmer, retaining its softness better than most trail midsoles we test.

Rocker

Looking at the side profile, we found a pronounced heel bevel and a gradual upward curve toward the toe.

The rear curvature is easy to spot beneath the tall sidewalls, and we believe Altra clearly designed this shoe with heel strikers in mind and trying to encourage smoother forward transitions for this group of runners.

Altra uses its Standard FootShape fit here, and we see the appeal for runners whose feet feel squeezed in more tapered trail shoes. Narrow-footed runners have the opposite concern: there's a lot of space (81.8 mm) inside this shoe!

We also measured a toebox height of 27.6 mm, so the impressive horizontal space doesn't come with an unusually tall ceiling.

We would describe this as a broad toebox with average vertical clearance, and that's absolutely what you expect from an Altra shoe.

Traction test

Vibram Megagrip delivers the upgrade we wanted for the Wild series. We measured a forefoot CoF of 0.90 on wet concrete, a very strong result and one of this shoe's clearest highlights.

That's a 53% higher coefficient than we found in the Wild 2 using the same test. The improvement is huge!

We measured the lugs at 3.6 mm, a moderate depth suited to the Wild's everyday trail role.

There's enough tread to make it a bit more trail-focused than a dedicated gravel shoe. Basically, we see a versatile choice for hardpack, mixed paths, and short pavement connections rather than deep, soft ground.

Turning the shoe over revealed pairs of triangular lugs, with small Traction Lug dots along their edges. The heel and forefoot patterns face in opposing directions as usual, while broad rubber sections cover the main landing and push-off areas.

We also found two exposed foam channels around the midfoot and narrow slots through the forefoot rubber aimed to improve flexibility.

Flexibilidad / Rigidez

The Wild 3 bent through 30 degrees with just 11.3N of force in our stiffness test.

We found less resistance than average and were positively surprised by this test, keeping the forefoot relatively easy to flex rather than locking it into a rigid platform despite the broad rubber coverage.

Estabilidad

Prueba de estabilidad lateral

The tall midsole sidewalls provide some structure around the foot, but we wouldn't confuse them with a particularly broad or rigid chassis. We found a conventional forefoot platform, a narrower heel, low collar, and mild resistance to twisting.

This is a fully neutral design that leaves the foot more freedom to move, and we don't recommend it for those with overpronation.

Rigidez torsional

Twisting the shoe produced a result of 12.8 Nm, putting the Wild 3 on the more flexible side of our trail shoe database. That's a very positive outcome for most Altra fans.

Vibram Megagrip backed up its strong traction result with an excellent showing against our Dremel. We measured just 0.5 mm of damage after the abrasion test.

We were pleased to find that the rubber performed strongly in both tests. For a shoe intended to cover varied routes and even taking over the some road sections, this combination of grip and abrasion resistance is much more compelling than excelling at only one of those tasks.

Breathability

The Wild 3 earned 4/5 in our smoke test, giving us a positive result for airflow through the upper. We see this as a useful quality for a shoe intended for everyday runs, hikes, and longer outings in warm conditions.

Our microscope images show the textured mesh and tiny gaps between its threads. The fabric doesn't have giant ventilation holes, but the smoke-test score shows that it still allows air to pass through effectively.

Altra uses flat, flecked laces with textile loops through the midfoot and two reinforced punched eyelets near the collar. The hybrid layout gives runners a way to fine-tune heel hold while the loops bring the laces into the sides of the upper.

The Vibram-equipped Experience Wild 3 comes with a €170 MSRP, making it more expensive than its predecessor. However, the regular version with MaxTrac rubber costs €20 less, keeping the same price as the previous generation.

In our view, the value is solid, especially for the Vibram version, but less convincing if energy return is your main priority.
