The dangers of taking dietary supplements

      • Consumption of energy products and weight loss supplements caused 71.8% of adverse events which include:
        • palpitations
        • chest pain
        • tachycardia
      • 58% of these cases are aged between 20 and 34 years old
    • Meanwhile, the leading problems of taking dietary supplements in adults aged 65 and beyond include
      • choking, pill-induced dysphagia, or globus at 37.6%
      • Micronutrient ingredients at 83.1%
  • According to an analysis done by Labdor on hair vitamins:
    • 38% of the products they tested deviated from their label claims of vitamin and mineral content
    • Biotin content for all products tested was 46% higher
  • Studies on herbal supplements from 2008 to 2013 revealed that:
    • 92% of the products tested positive for lead
    • 80% tested positive for other chemical contaminants such as arsenic, cadmium, and mercury
  • Antioxidants were believed to reduce cell damage but in supplement form, studies have shown that: 
    • High dose vitamin E and C supplements did not lower the risk of: 
      • hemorrhagic stroke
      • heart attack
      • death from cardiovascular disease
      • cancer/prostate cancer or diabetes
    • Large doses of vitamin E also did not help prevent the development of:
      • Age-related macular degeneration
      • Cataracts
      • Bleeding problems in those taking anticoagulant medications
    • High dose beta-carotene supplements increased the risk of: 
      • Lung cancer in smokers
