Adidas NMD_TS1 Primeknit History

The Adidas NMD_TS1 Primeknit low-top sneaker is a newer silhouette from the original NMD series that dropped at retail for the first time in 2016. The NMD style is inspired by three running shoes From Adidas’ archives namely the Adidas Boston Super, Adidas Micro Pacer, and Adidas Rising Star.

Adidas Originals Vice-president for Global Design Nic Galway pioneered the NMD’s design assuring that every part of the now-iconic shoe should be stylish and functional. The veteran footwear designer and Adidas executive at the onset wanted to create a sneaker that one can instantly recognize at first glance.

  Adidas NMD legacy

The NMD sneaker was first unveiled a month earlier on December 12, 2015, with features that include a sock-like construction with a mesh or Primeknit upper with a Boost midsole cushioning. Galway stressed during the announcement of the silhouette that every part of the sneaker should have its function and that if one part or component is removed, the sneaker will not function properly. For example, the Lego-like block at the side supports the Boost foam. The veteran designer stressed that the original Adidas NMD silhouette doesn’t have reinforcements that all elements of the upper give the actual structure to the entire shoe.

When German brand Adidas released the shoe, it became the most talked-about sneaker in the brand’s history. Ever since its release, the silhouette has had several transformations including collaborations with several sneaker retailers, clothing brands, and celebrities. The Adidas NMD was also released in various colorways, and further models were issued based on the Adidas Originals silhouette. The immense popularity and demand made people think that the NMD will end up like the Adidas ZX Flux which became too familiar until people don’t want to talk about it anymore.

But contrary to the fears of Adidas marketing executives, they continued to be sold out by the time it reached the shelves. Some of its designs, even without a celebrity endorsement or hype advertisements to boost its release, were cleared off the shelves in a matter of days. The resale value of the Adidas NMD sneakers increased exponentially including the rare collaborations and limited-edition versions that tripled its already hefty price tag. The OG Adidas NMD model, for example, is sold for more than a thousand dollars at some point during its peak with some resellers jacking up prices for the unique and rare collaborations every time the NMD gets released.

When the Adidas NMD sneaker was unveiled by Galway in December 2015, it converted an instant hit among sneaker fans wanting a new lifestyle shoe that is comfortable and equipped with the most modern sneaker technology. Another important reason for the NMD’s retail success is the widespread release of numerous colorways allowing wearers to buy several pairs of the same sneaker model.

The name of the Adidas NMD came from “nomads” or a group of people that frequently travels from one place to another. According to the German brand’s marketing arm, as nomads wander from one area to another, they only carry essentials to continue their worry-free travel. The same philosophy is what the Adidas NMD sneaker was all about as the design of the upper and sole was stripped to the bare essentials to come up with a lightweight and comfortable shoe. Another feature pointed out by shoe retailers and fanatics as the model’s strength is the Adidas NMD’s use of the reliable Boost cushioning technology.

  Adidas NMD_TS1 features

Continuing the legacy of the bestselling sneaker is the Adidas Originals NMD_TS1 Primeknit. To boost the marketing success of the design, Adidas released the shoe in collaboration with Japan’s Mita Sneakers. The shoe was sold first at Mita sneakers on July 7, 2018.

Adidas Originals took the Cages and Coordinates concept in the Mita x Adidas Consortium NMD_TS1 with the low-top height and midfoot top and slip-on design in the midfoot further accented by a speed lacing system.

With a little boost from Japan’s Mita sneakers, the world got acquainted with Adidas NMD_TS1 silhouette. The design was then followed up by a Gore-Tex iteration of the sneaker called Adidas NMD TS1 Gore-Tex. The model involves a midfoot shroud covering the shoe’s laces and the chukka-like construction which came out in the Core Black colorway. Adidas and Gore-Tex branding details were also placed on the upper with a German print of The Brand with the Three Stripes displayed clearly in the tongue and heel and the Gore-Tex branding at the laces and the medial side.

A few months later, as the sneaker world became familiar with the silhouette, the 3-Stripes brand dropped the Adidas NMD_TS1 Primeknit on September 6, 2018, at a steep price of $200 at retail. The first colorway that came out in watermelon green tones as the Primeknit upper is dressed in stripes resembling that of a watermelon combining black, grey, and bright green hues. Simple black accents can also be found at the suede heel tab, a speed lacing system secures the feet inside, while a midfoot tape covers the laces. A pink midsole block as in other NMDs compliments the watermelon-inspired theme as the top rests on the white Boost-cushioned midsole and black rubber outsole.

Adidas followed up with an Oreo colorway with a minimalist treatment that is devoid of sizeable Three-stripe branding details. The Primeknit upper material has a black and white knit material with horizontal lines while a taped branding detail runs through the midfoot panel. The midsole bricks on the side of the NMD sneaker are in pink and grey colors that give a much-needed pop above the white Boost midsole. The Adidas NMD_TS1 Primeknit’s heel tab also displays white text hits while the rubber outsole comes in light grey tones.

Other colorways that were released in 2018 also include the Bred and Purple/Grey colorways. Adidas has even hinted in November 2018 a collaboration with two of its most popular street-style collaborators BAPE and Neighborhood for a tweak on the Adidas NMD_TS1 Primeknit silhouette but has not yet released the collaborative shoe drop date yet.
