Who should buy the Merrell Ontario Suede Mid
The Merrell Ontario Suede Mid has received amazing compliments from hikers and casual wearers alike. It is a solid option if you:
- Prefer a hiking boot that offers lasting performance on the trail.
- Prefer a hiking boot that provides flexible support when walking or running.
Updates to Merrell Ontario Suede Mid
- The low-top full-grain leather hiker that became really popular in the past years now has its mid-top version in Suede. This model features a soft and velvety pigskin upper with the sticky Vibram Megagrip outsole for lasting performance on the trail.
- It also incorporates the Merrell Air Cushion in the heel for shock absorption and stability. Meanwhile, the compression-molded EVA midsole offers comfort without the added weight while the Kinetic Fit Base insole provides flexible support when walking or running.
Size and fit
As a mid-top hiker, the Ontario Suede keeps the ankle secure with its padded tongue and collar. Its suede leather upper conforms to the shape of the foot while the lace-up closure extending towards the top lets the wearer adjust the tightness whenever needed.
Excellent grip on wet and dry surfaces
This boot features the popular Megagrip outsole by Vibram. As hiking soles need to be durable and protective, the Megagrip outsole is made of a high-performance rubber compound that grips nicely on wet and dry surfaces. The triangular lugs throughout the sole are designed to create enough grip and stickiness on varying terrain, from soft forest trails to hard, rocky grounds.
Excellent traction on muddy terrain
However, the lugs are just 3mm deep so this boot might have less grip and traction on muddy terrain but feels really comfortable on pavement or even firm dirt.
Lightweight and flexible
The Ontario Suede mid-cut boots have midsoles made of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). It's a foam-like material that is very lightweight and flexible. It also cushions the foot very well.
Thanks to its soft texture. EVA is a popular material choice in performance footwear because it helps disperse weight and provide stability. One downside, however, is that it is less durable than the Polyurethane (PU) midsole which is commonly used in rugged hiking and mountaineering boots.
Additionally, this leather hiker also comes with a Kinetic Fit Base insole (also made of EVA), which is a removable footbed that offers flexible, intuitive support when walking. This insole provides absolute arch coverage and features organic odor control.
The entire upper is made of Suede leather which is available in four colorways, including Robe and Charcoal Gray. The collar, tongue, and interior lining are all made of mesh fabric to help with breathability. This boot also features metal lacing hardware which includes a second lace option (one pop and another tonal color).
