Contras

  • Disponibilidad limitada fuera de Asia
  • Solo para corredores neutros con buena técnica
  • Puede que el upper sacrifique demasiada comodidad

Who should buy

After testing the ANTA Zone 2 90 in the lab, we found that:

  • It offers some of the best value we’ve ever seen from a super trainer, combining elite-level performance with a crazy-low price.
  • It works exceptionally well for runners seeking a versatile and energetic training shoe.
  • Neutral runners curious about modern Chinese running shoes will likely find this model an excellent place to start.
  • Runners who enjoy the fast and bouncy sensation of a super shoe but want a more training-friendly setup will feel right at home here.

Who should NOT buy

One challenge with Chinese running shoes is still availability. Many mainstream stores simply don’t carry models like the ANTA Zone 2 90, so runners wanting easier access may prefer the widely-available adidas Adizero EVO SL or the Saucony Endorphin Azura instead.

We also think the narrow platform of the Zone 2 90 may feel too unstable for runners needing extra support or a more confident ride. Based on our lab testing, the ASICS Novablast 5 or the ASICS Megablast (only if budget allows) offer a more stable and comfort-focused experience.

Shock absorption

With 160 SA in the heel and 126 SA in the forefoot, the ANTA Zone 2 90 kicked off our lab tests with seriously impressive results.

These are outstanding numbers that position the shoe as a highly-capable option for virtually any type of training run, whether it’s a short and relaxed 40-minute jog or a brutally-demanding 20 miler.

Energy return

We've heard many positive things about the Nitrogen 90 foam from ANTA, but now we have real lab data to support those claims. And honestly, the results are seriously impressive.

The Zone 2 90 delivers incredible bounce with 72.4% in the heel and a staggering 77.3% in the forefoot, all at a suggested retail price that barely goes above the €100 mark. It almost feels unreal and makes us think that, despite being marketed for Zone 2 running, this shoe can tackle even racing especially for beginners.

Again, don’t let the low price fool you. The Zone 2 90 enters the market as a true top-tier super trainer, and that requires not only impressive performance but also a substantial amount of foam underfoot.

And yes, there’s plenty of it here. We measured 39.2 mm of stack height in the heel, which lands in a really appealing sweet spot for runners seeking a super trainer without venturing into the ultra-tall stack territory.

Dureza de la mediasuela

Actualizado

The midsole is the absolute standout feature of the Zone 2 90. Getting a PEBA-based foam with this level of bounce at such an affordable price feels genuinely impressive.

In terms of softness, we found the Nitrogen 90 foam to be balanced, landing near our current lab average with 35.1 AC. Therefore, don’t expect a firm ride, but it’s also far from being overly plush.

Rocker

One of the most distinctive design features of the Zone 2 90 is its late-stage forefoot rocker. Unlike many other super trainers, we found that ANTA created a more aggressive ride here that naturally pushes runners toward quicker toe-offs, although it may not suit those expecting a smooth and easy-cruising experience.

The heel also features a moderate flare and rises later than most competing models, further reinforcing the shoe’s fast-transition geometry.

ANTA Zone 2 90 Rocker

Placa

The Zone 2 90 is essentially a super shoe without a carbon plate, featuring a few smart adjustments aimed at making it more suitable for daily training. That philosophy becomes especially clear here, as ANTA skipped the carbon plate entirely and instead uses a midfoot shank very similar to the one we found in the adidas Adizero EVO SL.

This type of shank delivers a subtle stability boost without making the shoe overly stiff or uncomfortable for everyday runs.

Anchura / Ajuste

The so-called Asian fit often delivers a slightly wider forefoot and a bit more room around the toes compared to many Western brands, so we were especially curious to see if that trend continued with the Zone 2 90.

After letting the gel mold fully solidify in our fridge, we began taking measurements. The first result came in at 96.5 mm, which is slightly roomier than average, although only by a small margin.

Our second measurement may offer an even clearer sign of that Asian-fit philosophy, as the result came in at a more generous 75.7 mm. In our opinion, that’s especially good news for long-distance comfort and natural toe splay.

Traction test

While the ANTA Zone 2 90 has impressed us so far with astonishing lab results considering its remarkably low price, this test didn’t quite leave us speechless.

Still, that’s far from a disappointment, as the 0.57 score achieved in our SATRA TM144 traction test remains genuinely solid and translates to reliable grip in both dry and wet conditions.

Diseño de la suela exterior

The outsole design is especially interesting, with ANTA using a massive central cutout that stretches from the heel to the midfoot, while still managing to provide impressive rubber coverage considering how lightweight the shoe felt during our runs. We also liked the aggressive textured layout of the rubber, it looks different!

Flexibilidad / Rigidez

From a flexibility standpoint, this shoe lands almost exactly at our lab average, and we believe that’s the ideal place for it. It’s flexible enough to avoid feeling overly stiff at 15.1N, yet still structured enough to preserve the energetic ride and broad versatility that define the Zone 2 90.

Peso

Another massive win for ANTA appears here. At only 6.9 oz or 196g, the Zone 2 90 is incredibly light. We found that it even undercuts several premium super shoes like the adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 and the HOKA Rocket X 3.

This shoe is simply amazing for runners who enjoy a shoe that almost disappears underfoot, even during easy daily runs.

Breathability test

With such an incredibly low weight, it was clear to us that ANTA couldn’t use a comfort-focused upper here. Instead, the Zone 2 90 features a race-inspired construction built around an ultra-lightweight mesh reinforced with small TPU and synthetic leather elements.

We awarded it a 3/5 in breathability, which falls slightly below what we expected, although it should still perform well in nearly all running conditions.

The upper itself feels remarkably thin, and we also noticed solid airflow through the midfoot and tongue areas, helping improve ventilation around the toebox.

ANTA Zone 2 90 microscope

After inspecting the material under our digital microscope, we confirmed just how thin this upper really is. ANTA used a minimalist two-layer construction clearly designed with weight reduction as the main priority.

ANTA Zone 2 90 mesh

The only area where ANTA accepted a small weight penalty in favor of comfort is the heel, which comes with pleasantly generous padding. Beyond that, it’s obvious to us that this upper was engineered almost entirely around achieving the lowest possible weight.

Estabilidad

Prueba de estabilidad lateral

The current trend in super trainers is to make them noticeably wide and bulky, with shoes like the ASICS Superblast 3 serving as a perfect example.

However, the ANTA Zone 2 90 targets a completely different type of runner. Its midsole dimensions feel much closer to a super shoe, featuring a narrow midfoot and heel that prioritize agility over stability. Because of that, we recommend it only for neutral runners who are comfortable trading some stability for an exceptionally nimble ride.

Rigidez torsional

Actualizado

Using a midfoot shank instead of a full plate also helps the shoe achieve a nicely-balanced torsional rigidity of 13.2 Nm. As we explained during our torsional rigidity test, this result works especially well for runners planning to use the Zone 2 90 across a broad range of paces and workouts.

Rigidez del contrafuerte del talón

Another race-inspired detail of the Zone 2 90 that reinforces its non-stability-focused DNA appears here. With a heel counter rated at just 2/5 for stiffness, it doesn’t provide much extra support, although it also stays completely out of the way and nearly disappears on foot.

Anchura de la mediasuela - antepié

The ANTA Zone 2 90 features a forefoot midsole width of 112.3 mm. As we mentioned earlier, this shoe follows a very different philosophy compared to oversized super trainers, and that approach becomes immediately obvious here.

We find it a truly refreshing option in the current market, and for runners with a strong neutral gait and no real stability needs, this shoe could easily feel like a dream setup.

The insole design is one of the most unique details of the Zone 2 90. ANTA used colorful heart rate zone graphics to directly reinforce the original idea behind the shoe: long, controlled aerobic running.

Chinese running shoes are becoming famous for delivering an insane level of value, and the ANTA Zone 2 90 is one of the best examples of that trend.
