Adidas Superstar Glossy Toe History

First introduced in the year 1969, the Adidas Superstar was a low-top modification of the Pro-Model basketball shoe. It was the first shoe to feature a rubber shell-toe and an all-leather upper structure. The unique component of this silhouette has earned it some nicknames such as the “shell toe,” “shell shoes,” and “shell tops.”

The Superstar gained massive popularity during the 1980’s, especially among the hip-hop culture. The most well-known to have been big fans of the shell-toe was the hip-hop trio, Run D.M.C., in which they wore a pair of the Superstar in every public appearance. The hip-hop trio wore the shoe laceless and pushed its tongue out. With their devotion to the silhouette, they landed an endorsement deal with the brand after their Madison Square Garden concert that made history. Forty thousand people in their audience held up their Adidas up in the air as they have requested.

Decades later, the Adidas Superstar continues to influence many with its iconic style and rich heritage. Iterations were done to the silhouette from colorways to materials used for its structure.
