Adidas Tubular Instinct History

The Adidas Tubular was first created in the 90’s but never really made it as a popular Adidas shoe because it had a design that was several steps above the time. Nic Galway, VP of Designs for Adidas, went through the brand’s archives and was really drawn into some of the prototypes of the Tubular shoes from 1990s. With the new technology available now, manufacturing the shoe is a lot more feasible, and Galway worked to create today’s Tubular.

The Tubular technology was inspired by car tires and their tread, which can be seen on the outsole design. Both the Adidas Tubular X and the Adidas Tubular Instinct debuted in August of 2015.The Adidas Tubular series is now one of Adidas’ strongest on-going namesakes for over two years now, and they continue to evolve along the seasons to maximize the Tubular’s popularity.

The brand made a slight iteration of the Adidas Tubular Instinct and created the low top version of the model. The shoe was released in two tonal colorways: Core Black and Clear Brown. It was covered in a suede upper and some bits of mesh on the back part of the shoe. Another bit of iteration that the Adidas brand made to the Tubular Instinct is adding the Boost midsole to the silhouette.

In 2016, the Adidas Tubular Instinct Primeknit debuted and Adidas Originals used their Snapchat account to give everyone a sneak peak of the new shoe. The shoe was also worn by NBA star who was also signed to Adidas, Damian Lillard.

During the Fall/Winter 2016 release, Adidas collaborated with Mastermind Japan and gave the NMD XR1 and Adidas Tubular Instinct a fresh look. This collaboration is one of the brand’s famous releases. The shoe showcases a monotone colorway and the Skull and Crossbones motif, representing the partnership between the two brands. The Tubular Instinct is covered with a blacked-out leather upper. On the lateral heel of the shoe is the Skull and Crossbones branding.
