How various Nike shoes fit

Even though many factors can affect the shoe's fit (from insole design to the type of lacing used), some common tendencies can be traced in certain shoe categories:

  • Some footwear is meant to fit very snug, almost like a second skin for optimal athletic performance. These include track spikes and cross-country shoes. It also applies to minimalist/barefoot running shoes such as Nike Free.
  • Knit uppers like Nike Flyknit also create a sock-like wrap and are more suitable for medium-to-narrow feet.
  • Cross-trainers like Nike Metcons come with very wide toeboxes. It helps athletes splay the toes naturally when performing intense, multidirectional movements.

In our lab, we measure the toebox dimensions and internal length of Nike shoes from various categories. We also provide a detailed overview of each shoe's fit, design, and materials. Check our in-depth lab reviews below:

Unisex Nike shoes

Unisex shoes from Nike are easy to detect by the following size format:

M 9 / W 10.5

*M is for men's size and W is for women's

As you can see, women's size is 1.5 US bigger than men's. So ladies should refer to the number next to "W" when ordering unisex shoes from Nike.

This is most common for the brand's casual sneakers and basketball shoes.

Nike Fit: is it working?

In spring 2019, Nike launched a digital shoe fitting feature called Nike Fit. It appears on your smartphone while shopping through the Nike App. The brand claims that this AI-based scanner will map your foot through the smartphone camera, collecting 13 data points. The result is your specific size in each Nike shoe of your choice.

Those who tried the feature report that “it’s still a bit raw” and that it requires some improvement.

Nike shoes became friendlier for wider feet

Unlike Brooks or New Balance, Nike doesn't offer multiple widths for nearly every shoe they release.

Luckily, the brand now offers its most popular running shoes in an Extra Wide width too. You can get the roomier variant of shoes like Pegasus, Invincible, Infinity, Vomero, Winflo, Structure, Downshifter, Revolution, and Flex Experience.

How much wider are they? According to Nike, it is 0.6 inches (20 mm wider) than the regular medium width:

Extra Wide

regular width + 0.6 inch (20 mm)

Nike has also improved the regular Medium width of its shoes making the newer releases much more accommodating, specifically in the toebox. Having measured 55+ Nike running shoes, we found that their toebox dimensions are on par with the industry average:

  Nike Average
Toebox width at the widest part 99.4 mm 99.5 mm
Toebox width at the big toe 77.4 mm 78.5 mm

What to do if wider options are not available?

  • Try ordering half a size up from your regular Nike size.
  • Women can try a men’s model but US 1 size smaller (i.e. women’s US 8 would be men’s US 7), as men’s Regular width in Nike corresponds to women’s Wide.
  • Choose Nike shoes with wider toeboxes (roomy forefoot):

Nike shoes used to be notorious for running small, but over the last couple of years, nearly all Nike shoes we've tested proved to be true to size and consistent with other popular athletic brands.

Here is a comparison table of Nike shoe sizes vs. Adidas and other popular brands in the most common men’s and women’s sizes:

280 10 10 10 10
290 11 11 11 11
Women's US sizes
230 6.5 6 6 6
240 7.5 7 7 7
250 8.5 8 8 8

Nike sizes vs. Jordan and Converse

As Nike’s subsidiaries, Jordan and Converse share Nike’s approach to shoe sizing. So, you’re most likely to get the same size in three of these brands.

Jordan shoes even link to the same size chart as Nike shoes on the brand's official website. However, Converse has its own page dedicated to shoe sizing because some of its models (like the Chuck 70s) run large.
