As it’s name suggests, this is a boot that’s one of those all rounders. I’d take it on anything from quick jaunts straight from work to long multi-day backpacking adventures.

I’m not at the point where I’d fully retire my Chacos, but now whenever I want to move fast with a heavy pack, I’ll turn to the Chameleon 7.

  • 95 / 100 | Gear Junkie | | Level 1 expert

Overall, the Chameleon is good for hikers who need footwear a little heavier than a trail-running shoe, but lighter than many boots.

  • The Chameleon 7 Mid Waterproof is a Merrell trail boot designed with adaptability in mind. Its nubuck and suede leather upper is lined with an M Select Dry membrane to keep water out while allowing excess moisture to escape.
  • An ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) midsole is paired with a Merrell Air Cushion to achieve a comfy and stabilized ride. The gear’s Vibram TC5+ outsole gives ample traction on wet and dry ground conditions.

Merrell designed the Chameleon 7 Mid Waterproof for male and female hikers. It is offered in whole and regular sizes in standard width.  Permitting wearers to achieve a personalized fit is the boot’s closure system. Also, it runs relatively true to size.

Keeping the user’s footing secure is the Chameleon 7 Mid Waterproof’s Vibram TC5+ outsole. Its pattern of 3mm circular lugs renders traction on virtually all types of terrain. Several grooves are found in the heel and forefoot areas to improve control in uphill and downhill conditions. Moreover, the sole extends toward the toes to provide extra protection from stubbing.

This day hiking boot houses a midsole made of lightweight EVA foam and an Air Cushion in the heel area. This combination grants rebound and impact reduction. It comes with the brand’s patented FlexPlate technology, which makes the gear amply rigid and supportive. Its Kinetic Base Fit insole offers improved underfoot comfort and arch support while a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) heel counter enhances stability.

The Merrell Chameleon 7 Mid Waterproof’s nubuck and suede leather upper contains mesh panels to improve airflow. The M Select Dry membrane makes it a hiking boot that prevents water intrusions while maintaining breathability.

Eyelets, metal hooks and a synthetic lace make up the closure system. Its bellows tongue prevents debris from entering the gear while a pull tab allows an easy on and off. The forefoot is reinforced with a rubber cap to enhance its robustness.

The breathable, low-top version of this boot is the Merrell Chameleon 7.
