Who should buy
Based on our lab tests and running experience, we believe the Altra Vanish Pulse is a great option for:
- Fans of old-school racing flats seeking a low-stack shoe for training and shorter races.
- Runners who loved the Escalante Racer series and have been waiting for a third version.
- Those looking for a zero-drop shoe with a roomy toebox that handles both daily miles and speedwork.

Who should NOT buy
If you like the Vanish Pulse's low-stack design but prefer a higher drop, we've got you covered. Both the adidas Adizero Adios 9 and Topo Specter 2 offer a higher drop while retaining a versatile feel for training and faster runs.
We also believe runners seeking a dedicated racing shoe should consider lighter alternatives with a faster, more propulsive ride. Our pick is the Nike Streakfly 2.

Amortiguación
Shock absorption
The Vanish Pulse is a throwback to low-profile racing flats, and our shock absorption test shows the biggest compromise behind that approach. We measured just 94 SA in the heel and 83 SA in the forefoot, both significantly below average.
That leaves considerably less impact protection than most current road running shoes provide, particularly for longer runs.

Energy return
Altra introduces FAST PCE in the Vanish Pulse, a new midsole compound designed to deliver a more energetic ride. In our view, this upgrade was long overdue, as Altra has been lagging behind most of its competitors when it comes to foam technology.
Our measurements revealed 66.8% energy return in the forefoot and 65.4% in the heel. Both results are above average and well suited for tempo runs, although they don't put this shoe among the highest-rebounding racers.

Altura de la suela en la zona del talón
At a time when running shoes keep getting taller, Altra has gone against the high-stack trend with the Vanish Pulse.

We measured just 23.5 mm beneath the heel, considerably below average and perfectly in line with the shoe's purpose: filling the gap left by the Escalante Racer 2.

| Vanish Pulse | 23.5 mm |
| Media | 35.6 mm |
Altura de la suela en el antepié
The forefoot stack came in slightly lower than expected at 21.6 mm, firmly placing the Vanish Pulse in the low-stack running shoe category.
In our view, it's an ideal choice for runners who love a close-to-the-ground feel. However, anyone who prefers more cushioning underfoot won't enjoy this ride.

| Vanish Pulse | 21.6 mm |
| Media | 27.2 mm |
Drop
Altra advertises a 0 mm heel-to-toe drop for the Vanish Pulse. However, our stack measurements revealed a small difference between the heel and forefoot. We recorded an actual drop of 1.9 mm, which still delivers the same experience we expect from this shoe.
As we always point out, runners coming from traditional higher-drop shoes should take the adjustment period seriously. After all, this flat geometry places higher demands on the calves and Achilles tendon, making a gradual transition especially important.

Dureza de la mediasuela
Our softness test returned 36.6 AC, close to average and a good decision given the the Vanish Pulse's low midsole height. In our view, a softer foam would increase the risk of bottoming out the foam.
The freezer test was less encouraging. The foam became 31% firmer after just 20 minutes in the cold.

| Vanish Pulse | 36.6 AC |
| Media | 35.4 AC |
Rocker
Its low stack, plate-free construction, and forefoot flex grooves leave more of the transition to the runner's own foot movement. Those accustomed to an aggressive rocker doing much of the rolling work will find a different experience with the Vanish Pulse, that's for sure.

Anchura / Ajuste
Altra's Original FootShape design promises extra room around the forefoot, and our gel mold shows that this isn't just marketing.
We measured a substantial 101.1 mm at the widest point, significantly above average. It's a great result for runners who need space across the ball of the foot.

| Vanish Pulse | 101.1 mm |
| Media | 95.2 mm |
Anchura de la parte delantera
This is where the Vanish Pulse really separates itself from most shoes. Rather than narrowing sharply toward the big toe, Altra gives the front of the shoe an almost anatomical shape and 80.6 mm of width.

| Vanish Pulse | 80.6 mm |
| Media | 73.2 mm |
Altura de la parte delantera
Horizontal space is the headline feature of the Original FootShape fit, but we also checked whether there's enough room above the toes.
The Vanish Pulse delivered 28.8 mm of vertical clearance in our gel mold, an above-average measurement.

Tracción / Agarre
Traction test
Unfortunately, our traction test delivered a disappointing result. We measured a friction coefficient of just 0.44 in the forefoot.
In our view, that's not the kind of grip we want from a shoe designed for fast road workouts, where secure foot placement is essential. It's especially frustrating because Altra has already partnered with Vibram for the Torin 9, and we would have loved to see a similar outsole on the Vanish Pulse.

Diseño de la suela exterior
We found an outsole with impressive rubber coverage that looks more like a traditional daily trainer than a stripped-down racing shoe, which may explain why the Vanish Pulse never felt particularly lightweight to us.

Flexibilidad / Rigidez
With no carbon plate and an outsole designed for flexibility, we weren't surprised by the low result in our bending test. At just 9.3N, the Vanish Pulse clearly retains the DNA of the Escalante series.
This also makes it better suited for daily runs and tempo workouts than racing, as it lacks the snappy propulsion of plated or stiffer alternatives.

| Vanish Pulse | 9.3N |
| Media | 15.5N |
Peso
Considering how thin the Vanish Pulse looks, we expected a much lower weight. Instead, our scale showed 8.5 oz (241g), slightly lighter than the average road shoe but hardly impressive for a low-stack design.
And despite Altra positioning this shoe as a speed-focused option, we believe it's simply too heavy to excel in races and remains better suited for daily runs and tempo workouts.

Transpirabilidad
Breathability test
Another clear sign of the Vanish Pulse's Escalante heritage is its knit upper, which Altra chose over traditional mesh. While this usually improves comfort, breathability can suffer.
In our smoke test, the Vanish Pulse scored 3/5. That's a respectable result for a knit-based upper, but nothing impressive overall, especially for runners training in hot-weather conditions.

Estabilidad
Prueba de estabilidad lateral
The Vanish Pulse has no corrective elements or prominent medial support structures, as it's designed entirely for neutral runners. Moreover, its heel platform is fairly narrow.
In our view, this is a fully neutral shoe rather than one that actively guides the foot. And during our runs, we also found it noticeably more stable for midfoot and forefoot strikers than for heel strikers.
Rigidez torsional
The Vanish Pulse bends easily through the forefoot, but that doesn't tell the whole story about its structure. We also measured how much it takes to twist the shoe.
Surprisingly, our test returned 13.0 Nm, a bit higher than we expected from Altra. In our view, this extra torsional rigidity could be a dealbreaker for runners seeking the most natural-feeling ride possible.

| Vanish Pulse | 13.0 Nm |
| Media | 14.3 Nm |
Rigidez del contrafuerte del talón
Altra has kept the rearfoot construction relatively simple, using a knit collar and a small amount of structure rather than an aggressively reinforced heel cup. We awarded the counter just 2/5 in our manual stiffness test.
| Vanish Pulse | 2 |
| Media | 3 |
Anchura de la mediasuela - antepié
The Vanish Pulse doesn't sit on an oversized forefoot platform. That's an important distinction between the room available inside a shoe and the width of its midsole.
We measured 114.2 mm across the forefoot, very close to our current average. And it's a reasonable balance between agility and stability for the Pulse.

| Vanish Pulse | 114.2 mm |
| Media | 115.1 mm |
Anchura de la mediasuela - talón
At 81.8 mm, the Vanish Pulse narrows considerably toward the rear, following the shape of a traditional racing flat rather than a modern wide-based trainer.

Durabilidad
Durabilidad de la parte delantera
We didn't expect the lightweight knit upper to shine in our abrasion test, but the Vanish Pulse gave us a pleasant surprise and scored 4 out of 5!

Durabilidad del acolchado del talón
Unfortunately, things take a dramatic turn with the heel lining. Despite its soft-looking material, it performed poorly against our Dremel with a 1/5. This is the opposite of what we usually find in our tests, where the toebox tends to score lower than the heel lining.
| Vanish Pulse | 1 |
| Media | 3.4 |
Durabilidad de la suela
The outsole redeemed a bit in our abrasion test. Although its traction wasn't particularly impressive, the rubber proved notably resistant to wear with just 0.7 mm after we finished the test. That adds real value to the Vanish Pulse.
| Vanish Pulse | 0.7 mm |
| Media | 1.1 mm |
Grosor de la suela
We measured 3.0 mm of outsole rubber, almost identical to average and more in line with a daily trainer than a racing shoe.

Combined with its weight, this is another reason why we believe the Vanish Pulse is better suited for daily miles and tempo workouts than race day.

Grosor de la plantilla
The Vanish Pulse has a minimal-looking exterior, but Altra hasn't reduced every component to the bare minimum. In fact, we found a thicker-than-usual insole at 5.6 mm.

| Vanish Pulse | 5.6 mm |
| Media | 4.4 mm |
Plantilla extraíble
The upside of having a thicker insole is that minimalist-shoe enthusiasts can simply remove it for an even lower stack height. Alternatively, they can replace it with a thinner 1-2 mm footbed.
| Vanish Pulse | Sí |
Elementos reflectantes
One small feature we were happy to find is reflective detailing. The Vanish Pulse includes a reflective strip at the back of its finger-loop pull tab.
| Vanish Pulse | Sí |
Acolchado de la lengüeta
One thing Altra consistently gets right is keeping the lacing system simple, and the Vanish Pulse is no exception. Just punched eyelets and flat laces, with no gimmicks at all.

We also measured the tongue thickness, which further supports our view that this shoe sits between daily training and tempo workouts. At 3.4 mm, it's more padded than a race-focused design but thinner than what we'd expect from a heavy-duty daily trainer.

| Vanish Pulse | 3.4 mm |
| Media | 5.8 mm |
Lengüeta: tipo de refuerzo
Although the tongue looks simple, Altra has secured it to the upper with semi-gussets on both sides, and that's a real upgrade over the Escalante Racer 2.

| Vanish Pulse | Ambos lados (semi) |
Tirador del talón
A classic finger loop finishes off the Vanish Pulse at the heel. It's a simple detail, but we appreciate having something to grab.

| Vanish Pulse | Tirador circular |
Precio
The Vanish Pulse comes with a reasonable price tag. In our opinion, it looks like a zero-drop, wide-foot-friendly alternative to the hugely popular adidas Adizero EVO SL.
