Altra Experience Flow 3: análisis y review

In our view, the Altra Experience Flow 3 works for:

• Runners moving toward zero drop who need a reliable daily trainer during the transition phase.
• Fans of the previous Flow who accept less bounce in exchange for a more comfortable upper and a wider platform.
• Those looking for a flexible and durable shoe that handles daily miles and casual wear with ease.
• Wide-footed runners who need extra room for natural toe splay in a daily trainer.

We found in the lab that the EGO P35 midsole delivers underwhelming energy return, which limits its appeal for fast-paced running. Instead, the Altra Experience Flow 2 (while stock lasts) and the Topo Cyclone 2 offer a more energetic ride while keeping a foot-shaped fit.

We also believe that zero-drop purists may not enjoy the Experience line. In our view, the 4 mm offset shifts away from Altra’s original DNA, making it a poor pick for those seeking a true flat midsole. Instead, the Altra Escalante 4 (low stack height) and the Altra Torin 8 (moderate stack height) deliver a real zero-drop experience.

The Altra Experience Flow 3 delivers solid shock absorption in both the heel (127 SA) and forefoot (110 SA). These are not exceptionally high numbers, but they are strong for the stack height of this shoe and versatile enough to handle even the occasional long run.

Where the Altra Experience Flow 3 heavily disappointed us is in energy return. We recorded only 46.0% in the heel and 52.8% in the forefoot, numbers that fall clearly below what we expect from a modern daily trainer.

To be honest, this result caught us completely off guard. The midsole still carries the EGO P35 label from version 2, yet performance dropped sharply, as that model reached 60.3% in the heel and 68.1% in the forefoot.

That previous version earned our recommendation for runners seeking bounce, but this one does not meet that standard at all. The difference is not subtle and is easy to notice also during real runs.

And of course, when we see results like this, we always double-check. We repeated the test multiple times, also retesting version 2 and then returning to the 3, and we consistently measured the same outcome in both shoes.

Reading the spec sheet of the shoe, Altra states that the Experience Flow 3 features a 32 mm heel stack. Our measurement came in at 31.0 mm, a minimal discrepancy that can easily be explained by manufacturing tolerances.

It delivers a moderate level of height that works well for this shoe, as it is not designed to be a max-cushioning option but instead takes a balanced approach that favors midfoot and forefoot strikers.

Speaking of midfoot and forefoot strikers, we measured 25.8 mm in the front of the shoe, slightly below the 28 mm claimed by Altra. Nonetheless, it still provided enough cushioning for daily runs, which is not surprising since this result sits very close to the lab average.

A simple subtraction leaves us with a 5.2 mm drop. It is slightly higher than the 4 mm claimed by Altra, yet it still delivers the expected underfoot feel of the Experience series.

As such, it suits forefoot and midfoot strikers best, and also works well for those looking to take an intermediate step toward zero-drop.

One aspect that many runners criticized in past Altra models was the firm underfoot feel, and that clearly changes here. The Experience line is designed to attract runners coming from other brands.

The EGO P35 foam recorded 30.6 AC in our Asker C durometer, which is softer than the average running shoe and delivers a very comfortable feel for both daily use and runs.

While the Experience Flow 3 is not what we would call a truly rockered running shoe, it is clear that Altra introduces slightly more curvature here than in classic models like the Torin. Again, the goal is to align with what runners coming from other brands expect in a daily trainer.

To evaluate whether the Experience Flow 3 follows the usual design ethos from the brand, we analyzed it in our lab by creating a replica of the interior.

After cooling and extracting it, we measured the widest point at a notably generous 99.3 mm. Nice!

This shoe uses the Standard FootShape, which sits between the wider Original FootShape and the more performance-focused Slim FootShape.

Still, the toebox is also significantly wider than most running shoes, measuring 79.3 mm with our digital calipers. 

One aspect we found slightly problematic for some runners last year was toebox height, but Altra addresses that here with an upper offering more vertical clearance at 26.0 mm.

This results in a more accommodating and comfortable fit for daily use.

Traction sees an upgrade, now reaching a strong 0.70, which delivers excellent grip and leaves no excuses to skip a run even in rainy conditions.

The outsole design retains the core elements seen in most Altra shoes, with a segmented layout that mimics foot bones and natural movement. This year, we observed added rubber coverage on the lateral and medial midfoot compared to version 2, which provides a welcome boost in durability.

Thanks to the small outsole tweaks, the Altra Experience Flow 3 becomes 14% more flexible than its predecessor. This time, we needed just 8.6N to bend it to 30 degrees, reinforcing its appeal for runners who prefer a less stiff underfoot feel.

Another strong feature of the Altra Experience Flow 3 is its low weight. At 8.5 oz or 241g, we think that it is impressively light for a daily trainer that still delivers solid outsole coverage and good shock absorption.

That said, we also note a small 3% increase compared to its predecessor. It's likely linked to the added outsole rubber, making it a worthwhile trade-off that's basically impossible to notice while running.

Last year we expected better breathability after scoring 3/5, but this time it actually dropped further, as we rated the Experience Flow 3 at 2/5.

The new engineered mesh clearly improves in quality and feels more comfortable on foot, yet it somehow falls short of delivering the airflow we anticipated.

That result was surprising for us, as the upper looks like it should ventilate well. It is not overly thick, and the mesh pattern appears designed to promote airflow, but it did not perform that way.

Under the microscope, the upper shows a clear step forward in build quality for Altra. In this area, the brand is moving in the right direction, and for runners less focused on ventilation, this is a positive update.

The overall design and comfort of the upper also improve noticeably, which we appreciated. However, the secondary layer in the toebox seems to be the main factor limiting breathability.

The Experience Flow 3 is clearly designed for neutral runners, and those needing extra stability should consider the Experience Form instead. This shoe is not suitable for overpronation, as its soft foam and high flexibility enhance comfort but work against support.

There is clear design effort in this shoe to achieve low torsional rigidity despite having an average stack height, and Altra succeeds here. At 9.2 Nm in our test, it stands out for runners seeking a more natural feel.

Another clear indicator of this shoe’s limited support appears here. The heel counter offers a very natural feel and flexes easily, but with a 2/5 score, it is not designed to control lateral forces.

This is a change that may be controversial for some, although we believe it will be a positive for those coming from other brands.

The previous two Experience Flow models leaned toward a narrower platform, but this version expands to 118.1 mm. It is a clear increase from the 112.2 mm of its predecessor, bringing it closer to modern competitors and helping deliver smoother toe-offs in the forefoot.

The heel follows the same approach and widens to 94.1 mm. This adds a bit more bulk underfoot, but it remains within a reasonable range and never feels overly large.

While we hoped for better airflow, the upper still stands out if ventilation is not a priority. It delivers impressive comfort and now excellent durability, and after our first Dremel test, it earned a strong 4/5 score that left us very satisfied.

The heel padding scored slightly lower at 3/5, which is interesting since we usually see the opposite. Still, it remains a solid result that should not lead to early wear issues.

The updated outsole rubber of the Experience Flow 3 also faced our Dremel test. Afterward, we measured the indentation with a tire tread gauge at 1.3 mm, which is a solid result, though not exceptional and leaves room for improvement.

Fortunately, Altra used a thick 3.9 mm layer of rubber. This helps offset the slightly below-average result seen earlier and still leaves room for future weight savings if a more durable compound is introduced.

The insole is slightly thicker than average at 5.4 mm.

You can reduce a few millimeters of stack height by swapping in a thinner aftermarket option, which may appeal to runners who prefer a lower profile.

The EGO P35 foam became 28% firmer after spending 20 minutes in our freezer. That is far from an ideal result, although its naturally soft baseline helps it remain comfortable, even if the difference is noticeable underfoot.

Using the brand name or logo as a reflective element is something we believe many brands underutilize, and it’s a win-win. Altra does it here and also adds two vertical strips on the heel, achieving full 360-degree reflectivity and earning our applause.

The lacing system of the Experience Flow 3 follows a tried-and-true formula, with a simple eyelet chain using punched holes reinforced to prevent tearing, along with a loop on the tongue to keep it centered.

As for tongue padding, we measured 6.4 mm at the thickest point, which strikes an ideal balance for a shoe that aims to combine low weight with comfort, just like this one. Altra strategically added extra padding to the top half while keeping the rest thinner, helping achieve the weight savings mentioned earlier.

The tongue is gusseted to the sides, a thoughtful detail that not every daily trainer released this year includes, adding another point in favor of the Experience Flow 3.

The heel is cleanly finished and features a refined design that omits any kind of heel tab.

Most running shoe brands pushing prices higher in their latest updates, such as Brooks with the Glycerin 23 or Nike with the Pegasus 42, and Altra does the same with the Experience Flow 3. It is a slight increase, but an increase nonetheless.
