Adidas Barricade 14: análisis y review

With its reimagined construction, the adidas Barricade 14 appears to be targeting a slightly different audience this time around.

You are likely to benefit from it if:

• you prefer a court-connected ride to a well-cushioned setup
• you want a highly supportive shoe without bulky stabilizing components
• you need a highly breathable tennis shoe for warm weather

The shoe's lack of durability, particularly in the outsole, can turn many buyers away from the Barricade 14. In that case, the adidas Ubersonic 5 would be a much safer option, especially since it shares many of the same characteristics.

And if you are a baseline player who expected to see a classic stability-oriented shoe in the new Barricade and aren't keen on the major revamp, it's better to go with the ASICS Gel Resolution X.

The Barricade 14 takes a big step away from the previous versions in many different ways, and cushioning is one of them. With a rather low shock absorption measurement of 89 SA in the heel and an exceptionally low reading of 47 SA in the forefoot, we found that it prioritizes court feel over impact protection.

That makes the new Barricade feel much more like the low-profile Adidas Adizero Ubersonic 5 (82/48 SA) than the earlier Barricade 13 (102/56 SA).

The addition of an advanced Lightstrike Pro foam to the Barricade 14's cushioning setup had a rather tangible effect on its responsiveness! Although the shoe's energy return remained low in the heel (45.5%), it shot up to 52.2% in the forefoot, making this iteration significantly springier than its predecessor!

Aligning with adidas's promise of a 'more dynamic design,' this update surely helped the Barricade 14 become less baseline-biased and more versatile for all-court movement.

Shaving a few solid millimeters off the Barricade 13's platform, the 14 became one of the most grounded tennis shoes in our roster!

With a very moderate heel stack of 26.3 mm, the court feel got significantly more pronounced in this iteration.

But wait till you see the shoe's forefoot stack! At only 14.4 mm, it is by far the lowest among all tennis shoes we tested and is 7.5 mm lower than the forefoot stack of the ASICS Gel Resolution X!

This is great news for players who value precise footwork and agility, but it can be a punishment for people with ball of foot pain and sensitive toe joints.

The Barricade 14's heel-to-toe drop is not particularly gradual at 11.9 mm. This offset provides a bit of a forward pitch for quicker reaction and helps take the stress off the Achilles and calves. But on the downside, it is quite likely to cause toe jamming on hard stops if you haven't achieved a solid lockdown.

We are quite surprised that adidas's product description doesn't mention the presence of a full-length Lightstrike Pro in the Barricade 14, considering how advanced this foam is.

It is a rather firm compound, showing an above-average durometer reading of 50.8 AC. However, our experience with adidas running shoes that pack this foam showed that it does soften up with use.

The Repetitor foam dominates the shoe's heel area and even stretches up the rearfoot to form a supportive cradle. Our Asker C durometer showed that it is even firmer than the Lightstrike Pro at 53.1 AC.

Having created a cast of the shoe's interiors using custom liquid, we used a digital caliper to measure its dimensions.

Our results showed that the adidas Barricade 14 falls into the medium-width range but borders on the narrow category. At 90.9 mm at its widest point (ball-of-foot area), we found that the shoe provides a one-to-one fit for medium-width feet.

Meanwhile, players who need extra space can opt for the wide version of the shoe.

We were glad to find that the shoe's toebox is not aggressively tapered and has a standard width of 68.6 mm at the big toe.

The presence of a protective toebox overlay doesn't restrict the shoe's vertical toe space.

Measuring its toebox height, we got a regular caliper reading of 26.2 mm.

The new Lighttraxion outsole takes a step back in the traction department, offering a less sticky yet still reliable grip. Measuring its friction coefficient on a custom-built machine, we recorded a decent reading of 0.58.

While it's not as impressive as the Barricade 13's CoF of 0.90, it still ensures reliable and controlled movement, accommodating both hard stops and pivots.

The adidas Barricade 14 packs a split outsole to shed unnecessary bulk in the midfoot. It also features the most standard and straightforward herringbone tread pattern.

Despite its lower stack height, the Barricade 14 didn't get much more pliable than its predecessor.

We measured that it takes a moderate force of 16.2N to bend the shoe by 30 degrees (16.7N for the Barricade 13). That way, the forefoot flexibility of both shoes remains at the category average, striking a balance between maneuverability and support.

The adidas Barricade 14's more grounded, streamlined silhouette led us to assume that the shoe also lost some weight. But, unfortunately, that's not the case.

At 13.4 oz (380g) in a men's US size 9, we found it is just a smidge lighter than the previous version (13.9 oz/394g) and still heavier than the average tennis shoe.

There is one particularly welcome update that made us enjoy playtesting the Barricade 14 even more: the shoe's exceptionally breathable design!

As you can see from our breathability test above, the smoke rushed straight through the shoe's toebox fabric without any obstruction.

And that's not the only source of ventilation.

The brand also added a large gap in the sole's midfoot area and complemented it with a perforated insole to help with heat and moisture management from below.

The shoe's upper fabric also proved to be porous and quick-drying, elevating the comfort.

All in all, we didn't hesitate to rate this adidas shoe's breathability with the maximum score of 5!

Adidas keeps moving away from traditional midfoot shank designs like the Torsion System and is introducing more experimental approaches to lateral stability.

Akin to the Speedframe of the Ubersonic 5, the new Barricade 14 features a lightweight yet sturdy chassis that stretches from the midfoot back around the heel, forming a sturdy cradle for rearfoot and side-to-side support.

The shoe also features a stiff plastic 'claw' on the lateral side of its forefoot to make the outsole even more supportive. 

As a result, the new Barricade's construction sacrificed considerable torsional rigidity in favor of greater adaptability and agility. It is now among the most torsionally pliable tennis shoes, requiring only 13.4 Nm of torque to twist in both directions.

Yet another proof that the series shifted from a stability-heavy category into the more speed-ready range.

But that doesn't mean the Barricade has lost its ability to hold the foot firmly in place during aggressive cuts! Our tests confirmed that the shoe retained rigidity and structure in the areas that matter.

Namely, the heel counter. Completely immune to pushes and squeezes, it scored the highest 5/5 score in our stiffness test. There is not even a hint of wobbling or heel slipping in this deadly clutch.

In addition to being extremely grounded, the shoe's platform proved notably broader than average.

Our caliper measured the widest part of its forefoot at 116.8 mm, which is one of the largest measurements among tennis shoes!

The shoe's heel width also exceeded the average, reaching 93.6 mm. That's plenty of surface area for split-step landings and powerful push-offs.

Much like the earlier versions, the Barricade 14's forefoot area is reinforced with the ADITUFF abrasion zone. It's made of sturdy rubber that resisted our Dremel test fairly well, earning a high durability score of 4 out of 5.

Curiously, the ADITUFF is also used for the shoe's Three Stripes and features a visually appealing dragonscale pattern.

The bottom of the shoe's medial side is additionally protected with a flare of outsole rubber.

While the high-contact areas of the shoe's toebox are protected by ADITUFF, the rest of it is made of a rather dainty fabric.

Applying our Dremel to it caused significant damage rather quickly, lowering the shoe's toebox durability score to 2 out of 5.

The shoe's interior lining left us wishing for better wear resistance. Easily scuffed, it scored only 3 out of 5 for the durability of its heel padding.

And now we get to what may be the adidas Barricade 14’s biggest letdown: its outsole durability.

We couldn't believe just how quickly and easily our Dremel dug into the shoe's outsole rubber, leaving a considerable dent in the material! We had to repeat the tread gauge measurement a few times to be sure it was indeed 2.6 mm deep!

How is it possible that the iconic high-performance tennis shoe showed the absolute worst result in the entire category? Did we get a defective pair? Unfortunately, seeing similar complaints from other reviewers, this looks like poor material choice indeed...

The fact that the shoe's outsole thickness is only 3.0 mm doesn't help the situation either.

If you plan to purchase the Barricade 14, please be sure to buy it from a retailer that offers a durability warranty and a good return policy.

On a positive note, the shoe offers a very pleasant step-in comfort with well-padded interiors. Its insole, for example, proved to be thicker than average at 6.1 mm.

The insole is removable, so you can opt for a better-padded insert/orthotic to buffer some of the shoe's sensitive court feel. But keep in mind that replacing the insole means losing one of the shoe's breathability components.

The foam padding is equally abundant in the shoe's collar and tongue. The latter in particular showed an above-average thickness of 10.5 mm.

The shoe's tongue is semi-gusseted, or partially attached to the upper, ensuring that it stays in place throughout the match.

There are no pull tabs or finger loops on this adidas shoe.

Despite the major design overhaul, the Barricade 14's retail price stayed the same. And while the shoe offers a number of excellent characteristics, its questionable durability is an unpleasant surprise at this price point.
