The Nike Mind 002 is...something else. Its 22 individually moving foam nodes create a polarizing underfoot sensation that can be either pleasantly stimulating or downright annoying. But what's more important, our lab tests showed that its performance as a walking shoe is nothing exceptional. We found that the Mind 002 favors ground feel and flexibility over impact protection and support, while the exposed foam nodes raise serious durability concerns. And as much as we appreciate innovation and efforts to develop 'brain-boosting' shoe technologies, we are not sure Nike really succeeded here, especially at this price point.

Pros

  • Unusual underfoot sensation
  • Feels connected to the ground
  • Solid grip despite no outsole
  • Decent impact protection
  • Wear-resistant upper materials
  • Natural forefoot flex
  • Well-padded interiors

Cons

  • Node design is not for everyone
  • Questionable long-term durability
  • Minimal support and stability
  • Snug fit

Who should buy

We think the Nike Mind 002 could be an interesting option for people curious about footwear experiments and who are eager to form their own opinion on whether the Nike Mind offers any real health and wellness benefits.

Nike Mind 002 review

Who should NOT buy

We can understand why some people are equating the Mind 002 to an expensive pair of acupuncture slippers, and we can't say the comparison is entirely off.

For the same price, you can get a much more capable walking shoe with better cushioning, support, and durability for all-day wear. Namely, the HOKA Kawana 3, the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25, among other options.

Cushioning

Shock absorption

So much hype...yet so little shock absorption. With a below-average measurement of 98 SA, the Mind 002 is not exactly the all-day comfort walking shoe it appears to be.

We wouldn't recommend this Nike shoe to people looking for a well-cushioned pair to support their feet throughout the entire work shift, or to heavier people in need of better impact protection, or to someone with plantar fasciitis.

In fact, this shoe favors ground feel over cushioning, and perhaps that's what 'connecting with your surroundings' and 'staying more present in the moment' are all about.

Drop

And because its two stack heights are almost equal, the Mind 002 has a fairly low heel-to-toe drop of 3.9 mm.

Much lower than the typical walking shoe offset, it keeps the foot nearly parallel to the ground, contributing to the sense of connectedness that Nike promotes in this unconventional shoe.

Midsole softness

Note: Low measurement: softer. High measurement: firmer.

You might be surprised to learn that the Nike Mind 002's cushioning is nowhere near as plush as it appears in the promotional clips! Its primary midsole foam, which hosts the 22 nodes, is rather firm, with a high durometer reading of 50.7 AC.

The nodes are also made of a firm compound, but they create a more forgiving experience by compressing into the midsole. And this is where the 'engaging sensory areas of the brain' are supposed to kick in and help the wearer 'stay present and connect with [their] surroundings.'

Nike Mind 002 nods

We found the sensation rather unusual, but it might appeal to those who enjoy a reflexology-like experience underfoot. But at the same time, we can see how this design could absolutely rub many people the wrong way.

What's more, the claimed effects of this unusual setup on brain activity and wellness don't appear to be backed by a robust body of research. This is definitely a love-it-or-hate-it kind of experience.

Rocker

The Mind 002's midsole geometry has some light curvature, but it doesn't create any pronounced rocking sensation when walking. The shoe's low-profile sole adapts to the foot and bends with it effortlessly.

Width / Fit

For a shoe that's supposed to provide a comfortable, conducive environment for brain activity, we found the Nike Mind 002 a little too snug.

Once our custom liquid filled the shoe and formed a solid gel cast of its interior, we measured the widest area of its forefoot at only 90.0 mm.

Narrower than average, it feels pretty form-fitting on a medium-width foot. And because it's not offered in alternative widths, people with wide feet or bunions may wish for more space in this Nike shoe.

Toebox width

What's more, its aggressively tapered toebox doesn't make the shoe's fit any more relaxed. Using a caliper to measure its width in the big toe area, we recorded one of the narrowest readings among walking shoes at 64.3 mm.

Traction / Grip

Traction test

When it comes to assessing traction, the Nike Mind 002 is hard to compare against a traditional walking shoe with a full-length outsole or at least partial rubber coverage.

But its foam midsole and nodules performed surprisingly well in our traction test! Sliding the shoe against a wet concrete slab under a 500N force, we recorded a solid friction coefficient of 0.50. On par with the average, it can maintain grip on smooth, even wet urban surfaces, except on the slickest ones (like wet tiles).

Outsole design

Small rubber pieces are only present in the very forefoot and heel of the shoe's underside for some reassurance, but it's the round nodes that take on most of the landing pressure after all.

However, the practicality of the Mind 002's design still raises some questions. How will the nodes behave in rainy weather when stepping into puddles? Will small pebbles get stuck between the node and the carrier foam? What if the nodes wear out unevenly?

Flexibility / Stiffness

The low-stack platform and simple upper design of this Nike shoe allow for unhindered forefoot flexibility and smooth heel-to-toe transitions.

Weight

Considering how unburdened the Nike Mind 002's construction is, we expected it to weigh lighter than the category average. It is not a heavy shoe per se, but at 11.4 oz (334g), it adds a little more substance around the foot than we thought an advanced design like this would.

Stability

Lateral stability test

Testing the Mind 002's lateral support and stability, we were under the impression that Nike engineers thought, 'How can we design this shoe to provide as little stability as possible?'

As you can tell from our side-to-side movement in the video, the shoe's convex platform creates far more inward and outward rolling than a person with overpronation would desire.

If it weren't for the shoe's low stack and firm sole, which provide some inherent stability, we would've had serious concerns about its stability.

Torsional rigidity

The Nike Mind 002 doesn't offer much torsional rigidity to resist midfoot twisting either. At 12.4 Nm, it provides only minimal structure and basic lateral support.

Durability

Toebox durability

Outsole durability

But when it comes to this Nike shoe's outsole durability...We have some serious concerns.

Because its nodes are essentially made of foam, they are extremely sensitive to abrasive surfaces! Our Dremel chewed through the foam within seconds, as if it were butter, leaving a deep 3.4 mm cavity!

We cannot even begin to predict how long that material will last given its daily exposure to concrete and asphalt!

P.S. But if there is one risk we don't need to worry about, it is individual nodes coming loose or being pulled out. A pair of pliers confirmed just how firmly the nodes are anchored in place.

Misc

Removable insole

The shoe's unconventional design doesn't include an insole, but it features a unique footbed that works together with the nodes below it. Each node is covered in stretchy fabric, which helps it compress and move, providing that intended massaging effect underfoot.

Nike Mind 002 laces

Considering the Nike Mind 002's unusual design and the extensive marketing around it, we find it difficult to assess the fairness of its price tag.
