Nike Air Max 95 Ultra Essential History

The invention of the Air-Sole technology, a never-before-seen cushioning system that was lauded for its improved shock absorbing properties, was perceived as one of the most remarkable achievements of the brand. Introduced in the year 1978, it set in motion the rise of the Air Max series, a collection of innovative footwear that showcases this groundbreaking tech in a new light.

Back in the year 1995, Sergio Lozano, a trained industrial designer, was tasked to develop the iconic Air Max line’s 7th model. The result was the Air Max 95, a running shoe that captured both runners and running enthusiasts adoration for its individuality, not to mention its heightened performance.

Lozano, fascinated by the human anatomy, was inspired to design the Air Max 95’s silhouette based on the body's complex construction. He described the layered upper as the muscle fibers and flesh, the nylon eyelets were the ribs, the mesh was similar to the skin and the aggressive midsole resembled the spine.

The shoe’s design undoubtedly departed from the trend that the global giant has set for their runners. Thus, his concept was, on the onset, met with opposition. Not only did the shoe flaunt an uncommon design, it was also the first to incorporate a visible air unit on the forefoot, a black sole, as well as a gray hue, an unpopular color during that period.

Despite all its controversial features, the Air Max 95 still gained a cult following. Soon enough, it was embraced by the popular culture making is a staple among athletes and sneaker collectors.

This runner turned lifestyle footwear, till now, remains iconic even for youngsters who were not present when this shoe first appeared. Available in countless colorways and variations, this shoe’s popularity does not show any signs of abating.

The Nike Air Max 95 Ultra Essential, a no-frills version of this classic, debuted in September 2016. Slimmed down to meet modern-day consumer’s needs, the shoe is recognized for its Ultra outsole tooling and seamless Hyperfuse upper. Its prominence in the market is maintained despite being dropped without forewarning.
