Who should buy
While the target audience of this Altra boot is not very broad, we can highly recommend the Lone Peak Waterproof Mid to hikers who:
- specifically look for a minimalist, low-stack, and low-drop/zero-drop hiking boot
- want a trail-connected experience but with decent protection from impact and rocks/debris
- need a spacious, foot-shaped toebox in their outdoor boots

Who should NOT buy
If you primarily do easy hikes on moderate terrain, you could save €40 on the boot's less reinforced version, the Lone Peak Hiker 3. Its upper design isn't as tough, and it doesn't include a StoneGuard rock plate. And for an even more stripped-down and breathable option, you can consider the Lone Peak 9 trail shoe.
On the other hand, if your feet and legs beg for high shock absorption, then the Altra Olympus 6 Hike Mid GTX is for you. It features the brand's signature zero-drop setup and spacious toebox (Original Fit).

Amortiguación
Shock absorption
Even though it's a minimalist hiking boot, we found the Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid's cushioning-to-stack ratio quite impressive!
With a shock absorption measurement of 87 SA in the heel, it's not much lower than the hiking boot average. That's some decent impact protection even for long hours on the trail!

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 87 SA |
| Media | 92 SA |
Energy return
This Altra boot features the brand's standard EVA blend called EGO, which is the same midsole foam as in the Lone Peak 9 trail shoe. We could immediately feel its highly responsive nature in our wear tests, and it also reflected in a high energy return measurement of 59.7%!
We thoroughly enjoyed how this Lone Peak boot blends groundedness with a fun, dynamic ride!
| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 59.7% |

Altura de la suela en la zona del talón
Although it's not as barefoot-like as the Lems Boulder Boot (18.2 mm), the Altra Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid showed one of the lowest stack heights among the hiking boots in our lab.
Our digital caliper measured only 24.2 mm at the boot's heel, which is 10+ mm below the category average!

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 24.2 mm |
| Media | 35.8 mm |
Altura de la suela en el antepié
Positioned as a zero-drop boot, the Lone Peak 9 Mid was supposed to return the same stack in its forefoot. However, our caliper measured it a little lower at 23.0 mm.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 23.0 mm |
| Media | 23.1 mm |
Drop
This minor 1.2 mm discrepancy means the boot isn’t perfectly zero-drop, but the difference is negligible, and the foot position still feels very flat.
But if you are completely new to zero-drop or even low-drop footwear, it's better to start slowly and allow yourself a generous adaptation period because Altra boots are a very far cry from the typical 10-14 mm drops of classic outdoor boots!

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 1.2 mm |
| Media | 12.7 mm |
Dureza de la mediasuela
ActualizadoAs an EVA-based foam, the Altra EGO leans more towards the firm side of the spectrum. What's more, a full-length StoneGuard rock-protection layer inside its midsole (the thin blue layer in the photo above) contributes to its firmness.
Pressing our durometer against it indeed returned a middle-range, moderately soft reading of 38.7 AC. The compression is very minimal, but it's enough to prevent the ride from feeling harsh.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 38.7 AC |
| Media | 46.8 AC |
Rocker
The Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid has a flat base, offering maximum ground contact and a good sense of plantedness.

Anchura / Ajuste
The Lone Peak 9 boot is built on Altra's roomiest Original last, which becomes immediately apparent on foot. But let's take a look at the one-to-one gel mold of its interiors for a more precise comparison with the other hiking boots.
Measuring the distance between the mold's most extended points, we got an above-average reading of 96.1 mm indeed. But even though it already falls into the wide range of hiking boots, it is also available in a wider width!

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 96.1 mm |
| Media | 93.9 mm |
Anchura de la parte delantera
The foot-shaped toebox of this Altra boot also proved the widest of all boots in our lab, with a whopping 82.4 mm at the big toe!
It's an exceptionally wide-set boot that comfortably accommodates all five toes, allows unhindered toe splay, and has the lowest risk of causing blisters or pressure points.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 82.4 mm |
| Media | 71.6 mm |
Altura de la parte delantera
It also has a normal toebox height for a boot at 27.1 mm.
That way, there is plenty of wiggle room in both the horizontal and vertical directions.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 27.1 mm |
| Media | 27.5 mm |
Tracción / Agarre
Tracción en el antepié
Rain or shine, the MaxTrac outsole of the Lone Peak 9 Mid will keep you covered on a wide range of terrain types. But more specifically, our lab test revealed the boot's excellent traction on wet surfaces with a high friction coefficient of 0.63.
| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 0.63 |
| Media | 0.57 |
Profundidad del dibujo de la suela
A lug depth of 4.0 mm makes this Altra boot versatile enough for a little bit of everything: wet rocks, smooth boulders, mossy logs, light mud, grassy patches, and more.
But please note that it won't get you very far in deep mud and very soft ground. That requires at least 5 mm of lug depth.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 4.0 mm |
| Media | 4.3 mm |
Diseño de la suela exterior
The boot features a familiar claw-like outsole design from Altra, with its aggressively pointed chevron lugs for climbing steep ascents and braking on descents.
It also has segmented metatarsal zones in the forefoot for enhanced flexibility.

Flexibilidad / Rigidez
Flexibility is, of course, one of this Altra boot's standout features, given its minimalist construction. Our lab test showed that at 18.2N, it takes 40% less force to bend the Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid by 30 degrees compared to an average hiking boot!
Such pliability encourages more natural foot movement, allowing the foot to bend effortlessly and providing better proprioception on tricky terrain. Not to mention, it also makes the grip more effective when scrambling or tackling rocky terrain.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 18.2N |
| Media | 30.3N |
Peso
Built on such a minimal platform, we expected this Altra boot to weigh much lighter than the number on our scale. It is still notably lighter than average at 14.7 oz (417g), but it's also heavier than the Altra Lone Peak Hiker 2 (12 oz/339g).

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 14.7 oz (417g) |
| Media | 18.3 oz (518g) |
Transpirabilidad
As a waterproof boot, the Lone Peak 9 Mid doesn't promise much breathability, so it's best to limit its use to temperatures below 70°F (20°C).
The boot's upper materials didn't show a tiny hint of permeability in our smoke-pumping test thanks to its waterproof membrane.

And as our microscope test showed, the fibers in its upper textile are super closely interlaced.

That's an obvious 1 out of 5 for breathability.
| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 1 |
| Media | 1.3 |
Estabilidad
Prueba de estabilidad lateral
Unlike most robust hiking boots, the Altra Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid doesn't rely on any additional stabilizers for ankle support. Intended for moderate adventures, it's built with some inherent stability for shorter hikes and lighter packs.
Rigidez torsional
Even though this Altra boot bends forward easily, it shows significant torsional resistance due to its full-length rock plate, firm EVA midsole, and raised midsole topline.
That's surprisingly rigid for a minimalist boot, earning a high stiffness score of 4.
| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 4 |
| Media | 4.4 |
Rigidez del contrafuerte del talón
The boot's heel counter is not particularly stiff (3 out of 5) but has some structure for rearfoot support. It's also abundantly padded inside and has a molded shape that holds the heel and ankle well without restriction.
We also appreciate the sloped shape of its collar, which sits lower in the rearfoot, easing pressure on the Achilles and allowing more ankle mobility on descents.
| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 3 |
| Media | 3.6 |
Anchura de la mediasuela - antepié
That flat platform of this Altra boot appears very broad, but our caliper measurements show it's right on par with category averages.
The widest part of its forefoot, for instance, comes in at 113.3 mm.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 113.3 mm |
| Media | 111.6 mm |
Anchura de la mediasuela - talón
Meanwhile, the boot's heel is even slightly narrower than average, measuring 83.4 mm at its widest point. It makes the Lone Peak 9 boot slightly more maneuverable on alpine trails, making it less likely to get caught between rocks.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 83.4 mm |
| Media | 87.5 mm |
Durabilidad
Durabilidad de la parte delantera
Featuring a lot of seamless, welded overlays throughout its upper, the Lone Peak 9 Mid is pretty well protected from scrapes and scratches. But even the boot's exposed textile showed impressive abrasion resistance in our Dremel test!
Showing only minimal wear, it earned a high toebox durability score of 4 out of 5 - same as the nubuck leather of the Altra Olympus boot!
| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 4 |
| Media | 4.3 |
Durabilidad del acolchado del talón
The interior heel lining, on the other hand, left much to be desired. We expect some premature signs of wear here as the fabric tore almost instantly under the Dremel!
| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 1 |
| Media | 3.4 |
Durabilidad de la suela
But gladly, the boot's exterior parts promise solid longevity. Its outsole also resisted the drilling quite well, showing a regular dent depth of 0.9 mm.
| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 0.9 mm |
| Media | 0.8 mm |
Grosor de la suela
In tune with its minimalist platform, the outsole layer of this Altra boot is also thinner than average at 1.9 mm. This helps shave off some grams from the boot and keeps it decently pliable.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 1.9 mm |
| Media | 2.9 mm |

The insole is also easily removable, allowing for custom orthotics. Please note that not all inserts will match the generous toebox of this boot.

Rigidez de la mediasuela en frío (%)
Low temperatures don't have a critical effect on the midsole firmness of this Altra boot. Even though we recorded an 18% increase in firmness after our 20-minute freezer test, it is within the normal range for hiking boots.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 18% |

Elementos reflectantes
Our dark room test detected no reflective elements on the Lone Peak 9 boot.

Acolchado de la lengüeta
Despite the boot's low-stack design, Altra didn't skimp on the internal padding of its upper.
In addition to the padded collar, the entire length of the boot's tongue is generously lined with 8.6-mm-thick foam.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | 8.6 mm |
| Media | 11.0 mm |
Lengüeta: tipo de refuerzo
A semi-gusseted tongue complements the boot's waterproof design, sealing out water, sand, pebbles, and other debris.

Tirador del talón
A large finger loop at the back of the collar eases entry in this Altra boot.

Precio
The Lone Peak Waterproof Mid is not a cheap buy, but its quality and performance make it a good choice for those seeking a minimalist boot with a foot-shaped toebox.

| Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid | $190 |
Lace hooks
Two pairs of lace hooks at the top of the boot's collar make lace adjustments faster and easier.

Gaiter attachment
The boot also comes with a Velcro attachment for the gaiter.
