The boutique fitness industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the fitness industry. To better understand the size, growth, and facts about this industry, we researched and compiled more than 45 statistics about boutique fitness. 

Top boutique fitness industry statistics for 2021

  • The boutique fitness industry is expected to be worth $22.1 billion by 2022, up 4.63% from their pre-pandemic levels of $21.1 billion in 2019
  • The industry is projected to grow to $26.2 billion in 2025, up 16.97% from 2022
  • Boutique fitness industry revenue is estimated to have dropped to as low as $8.8 billion during the pandemic in 2020
  • In the next five years, the boutique fitness industry is expected to add 2,000 new studios.
  • More than 42% of all gym memberships are too boutique fitness studios, making up nearly half of the $102 billion revenue from the gym industry in 2021

2020 

  • During the Pandemic in 2020, revenue is estimated to be as low as $8.8 billion.

2019

  • In 2019, the industry was estimated to be worth $21.1 billion with high-end boutique gyms making up over a third of the market

2018

  • Compared to other types of fitness studios, indoor cycling studios generate 55% more revenue

By 2018, 40.7% of the overall market share came from the boutique fitness industry. Of that 40.7%:

  • Personal or small group exercise or training = 13%
  • Barre, yoga, pilates, and related studios: 9.2% 
  • Cycle and rowing studios = 7.3%
  • Cross training and boot camp classes = 4.5%
  • UFC, MMA, boxing, and other martial arts boutique studios: 3.7%

Age

  • Boutique fitness members are approximately 30 years old on average, 10 years younger than traditional gym-goers
  • 3 out of 4 of this generation prefer spending money on experiences rather than things, which is why boutique fitness was created for them. As they enter their prime spending years, they represent the generation with the greatest opportunity
  • Back in 2012, about 37% of all boutique attendees were between the ages of 18 and 34, making up 28% of memberships in 2016.

Gender

  •  77% of boutique studio participants in four major cities were women, with only 23% men participants
  • Yoga, barre, and pilates studios have significantly female membership rates while cross-training and boot camp studios have higher membership rates of men

  • The average cost of a monthly membership with unlimited visits at a boutique studio ranges from $110 to $360
  • Newer, locally owned, and less-established studios will charge $15 to $25 dollars per class on average while more popular studios and franchises charge $25 to $40 dollars per class. 

 Future of boutique fitness:

  • With "embracing fitness tech inside and outside the club" receiving 24% of the votes in IHRSA's 2019 trend poll, the stage is set for boutique fitness studios to grow significantly, reach bigger audiences, and offer wider/more niche services
