Our verdict

The Nike Pegasus Trail 2 GTX is a trail shoe that REALLY impressed us. It kept our feet dry all throughout the wet conditions we ran! It's made for training runs so don't expect anything fast. Instead, expect a superbly bouncy and comfortable shoe that will mute out all the rocks and roots underfoot. Even better, in areas of grip and durability, this shoe will wow you!

Who should buy Nike Pegasus Trail 2 Gore-Tex

This is a hybrid daily trainer perfect for training sessions run mostly on trails, less on roads. It prioritises dry feet! It’s waterproof and therefore ideal for cold and wet runs.

Who should not buy Nike Pegasus Trail 2 Gore-Tex

Look away if:

Waterproofness is THE reason to buy this shoe

If rain, snow, and puddles are your regular companions on the run, then investing in a GTX version of the acclaimed Pegasus Trail shoe is a good idea. We found its waterproofing to be outstanding!

Here is what we did to test this:

  • ran through puddles,
  • did rainy runs,
  • sprayed it from a hose and
  • stood in puddles for minutes.

No water got into the shoes and we were impressed!

There is just one drawback to the shoe's insane waterproofness: it is not breathable.

Not breathable at all

Too waterproof to be breathable. Performing our transparency test on the Pegasus Trail 2 GTX, we put a light inside the shoe in a dark room. As you can see from the photo below, the shoe's transparency is close to zero.

Almost no light got out of the shoe during our transparency test.

If you wear this Nike shoe on a dry and warm day, expect your feet to get quite hot and sweaty.

Pegasus Trail 2 GTX is bouncy!

Bouncy, spring, and ALIVE! This is how the shoe's cushioning felt on our test runs. If the waterproof membrane was the #1 reason to buy this shoe, this is #2.

The ride gets nothing but praise from us and we believe that it’s all about the foam. It absorbs a lot of shock thanks to the big stack of foam. It’s so good at underfoot protection that we never missed a rock plate even once.

The ride even reminded us of the famous Hoka Speedgoat feeling.

Really durable

Predicted to last: several hundreds of miles.

After 100 miles, we saw no holes in the upper or serious signs of wear on the outsole. The Pegasus Trail 2 GTX is holding extremely well.

Good hybrid grip on Pegasus Trail 2 Gore-Tex

The shoe's lugs aren’t deep, but they exist! While it’s meant as a hybrid shoe, the Nike Pegasus Trail 2 Gore-Tex still performs better on trails than roads.

We've tested it on dirt roads, trails (snow), and pavement.

Heavy, but it doesn’t feel so

At 12 oz (340g), the Pegasus Trail 2 GTX is 1.5 ounces heavier than trail shoes on average! On paper, that's a pretty heavy shoe.

However, on the actual run, this Nike caught us off guard - it didn't feel heavy at all! So, all good. It's got a lot of foam to keep you protected and bouncy but not too much so that it’s pulling you down.

Useless heel tab on Pegasus Trail 2 GTX

It certainly looks cool, but it doesn’t work well and it appears to be more of a marketing move.

Who needs a giant pull tab they can’t really use?

Semi-gaiter lets the snow inside

It’s like a mini gaiter. It works, but only a bit. We did notice that less debris is getting inside the shoe but it's not as protective as a proper gaiter. For example, snow still managed to slip inside.

Perhaps, it would've been a perfect winter running shoe if it came with a mid-top collar, instead of having this poor excuse for a gaiter.

Gorgeous looks

It’s a beautiful shoe.
