Topo Terraventure 5: análisis y review

The Topo Terraventure 5 is a very interesting trail shoe for those that:

• Dislike modern trail shoes with very high stacks and want a more grounded ride.
• Want a versatile, durable and agile trail shoe for hiking running.
• Have wide or high-volume feet and struggle to find comfortable trail shoes.

The low-stack design of the Topo Terraventure 5 may rule it out for heavier runners or those planning long-distance trail runs. If that's your case, take a look at the Topo Vista for maximum cushioning or the Topo Ultraventure 4 for a more balanced option.

We also think the shoe's weight may be a deal-breaker for runners who expect a low-stack shoe to feel lightweight. If that's what you're after, the Nnormal Kjerag is a better option.

The Topo Terraventure 5 was never designed as a max-cushioned shoe, but rather as the opposite. Because of that, the shock absorption we found in the lab falls below average, with 111 SA in the heel and 77 SA in the forefoot.

While some runners may see these numbers as a sign that the shoe lacks impact protection, we see them as confirmation that it delivers exactly what it promises: some protection while preserving plenty of ground feel.

For shoes that aren't focused on performance, Topo usually relies on its ZipFoam compound. That's the foam we found in the Terraventure 5, so based on our experience with it and our impressions during runs, we already had a clear idea that this wasn't going to be a high-energy-return shoe.

In fact, its energy return sits well below our current lab average for trail shoes, with 49.3% in the heel and 52.8% in the forefoot. As we've said with other Topo Athletic shoes, we think ZipFoam is due for a replacement. Go for it, Topo!

The Terraventure 5 promises a low-stack design with plenty of ground feel, and we confirmed that with a 25.8 mm heel stack measurement.

The forefoot comes in even thinner, clearing the 20 mm threshold by a slim margin at 21.2 mm.

If you want a feedback-rich ride and hate shoes that feel disconnected from the ground, the Terraventure 5 is for you.

Most Topo Athletic shoes feature a 5 mm heel-to-toe drop, but the Terraventure 5 is an exception. The brand claims a 3 mm offset, yet we measured slightly more at 4.6 mm.

In any case, this shoe feels much better for midfoot and forefoot strikers, so keep that in mind.

Topo chose a firmer formulation of ZipFoam for the Terraventure 5, and we can't blame them. With low-stack shoes, it's common to avoid softer foams to prevent them from bottoming out with every stride.

We used our Asker C digital durometer and recorded a 42.6 AC reading.

Another advantage of the Terraventure 5's low-stack design is that the shoe doesn't need an aggressive rocker to feel agile. Topo went with moderate curvature in both the heel and forefoot, although we think the shoe could have worked with an even flatter profile.

Given the limited amount of foam in the midsole, Topo added a forefoot rock plate just above the outsole to provide an extra layer of protection against trail hazards.

Topo is one of the easiest brands to recommend for runners with wide or high-volume feet, as almost every shoe that comes out of its factories offers immense room inside the upper.

The Topo Terraventure 5 is no exception, and we verified it with our gel test. Our first reading of 98.4 mm gives us a small glimpse of what's to come, but there's more to uncover.

We measured the toebox and found a remarkably high 84.5 mm reading. For runners who love to spread their toes like a frog, this is a dream come true!

The Terraventure 5 also features a generous toebox height, giving it three measurements clearly above our current lab average and making it an ideal shoe for runners with high-volume feet.

Vibram Megagrip is a trail legend, and it proved its worth once again here. A coefficient of friction of 1.07 on wet concrete is simply magnificent, ensuring excellent traction across all kinds of weather and terrain.

The Terraventure 5 also keeps the versatile lug depth that has long defined the series. With 4.0 mm lugs, the shoe handles a wide range of terrain with ease while still offering enough bite for some technical sections.

Think of it this way: if you divide trails into 30% easy, 50% moderate, and 20% technical terrain, we think the Terraventure 5 can cover almost 90% of them thanks to its versatile lug depth and the excellent grip of Vibram Megagrip.

We are also really satisfied with the Terraventure 5's outsole coverage. Almost the entire outsole is protected by Vibram Megagrip rubber, with only a few flex grooves left open to reduce stiffness. Even then, what you see beneath Vibram is the rock plate rather than exposed foam. That's a great setup for long-term durability!

The Terraventure 5 isn't a flexible shoe despite its low-stack design, largely because of the rock plate in the forefoot. In our 30-degree bend test, we recorded 14.0N, which is close to the current lab average.

One of the Terraventure 5's weakest aspects is its weight. While we understand that Topo Athletic prioritized durability and comfort here, we still think 10.6 oz (301g) is too heavy for a shoe with this stack height.

With a supercritical EVA foam and a few weight-saving optimizations, we could be looking at a shoe that's 15% or even 20% lighter and, therefore, more versatile and fun to ride.

The Topo Terraventure 5 delivers a stable, planted ride thanks to its low stack height and firm foam, a combination that's becoming less common in today's market but works wonders for stability.

We secured the Terraventure 5 to our custom-built machine for torsional rigidity testing and twisted it left and right. It took 13.3 Nm of torque to do so, which is below average but still more than you might expect from a low-stack trail shoe. Again, the rock plate is the main reason.

The heel counter offers no surprises, as it's very similar to those found in road running shoes, with moderate stiffness and a 3/5 score in our manual assessment.

One of the Terraventure 5's biggest strengths is how stable it feels despite its moderate dimensions, making it easy to enjoy for everyday use and hiking as well as running.

We measured 116.5 mm in the forefoot, which is very close to our current lab average for this test.

Like most Topo shoes, the Terraventure 5 strongly favors midfoot and forefoot strikers, so we're fine with the relatively narrow 87.1 mm heel, as it helps preserve the agility we mentioned earlier.

With a 3/5 score for toebox durability, the Terraventure 5 delivers a positive result here. That's important because the Terraventure series has always been known for its solid durability.

The heel padding could be more durable, as its 2/5 score is a bit lower than we hoped to see.

Vibram rarely disappoints when it comes to durability, and is yet another reason why so many trail brands choose this rubber. In our test, we removed just 0.9 mm of material, which is a positive result.

Topo asked Vibram for a 1.8 mm-thick outsole, which is right around average and seems like a reasonable choice. Anything thinner would probably be a mistake given the Terraventure 5's low stack.

The Ortholite insole isn't made from EVA foam. Instead, it uses a beaded TPU foam similar to adidas' Boost, with a thickness of 5.3 mm.

You can replace the insole if you want, although you'll lose some of its extra features, including a bit of added bounce to compensate for ZipFoam's lack of energy return and its water-resistant construction.

ZipFoam usually performs well in cold weather, and we proved it here. Despite using EVA as its base material, it handled our 20-minute freezer challenge well, getting only 16% firmer.

The Topo Terraventure 5 comes without reflective elements, and we think it should have at least a few.

Topo went with a simple yet trusted design, using punched eyelets and its usual two lace loops to keep the tongue centered.

We also found a thick tongue with 8.5 mm of padding. That's ideal if you want to use the Terraventure 5 for all-day hikes, but we think it should be a bit thinner to remove some weight from the shoe.

The tongue is almost fully attached to the upper, effectively blocking debris from getting inside the toebox.

Topo added a sturdy finger-loop heel tab with secure stitching, so you can pull on it without worry. As you can see in our photo, it also features a Velcro-based gaiter attachment for runners heading into wild adventures.

We think the Terraventure 5 is fairly priced at its current MSRP. However, for us to call it a really good deal, we'd need to see a better midsole foam. And that's not the case... yet.
