We love seeing brands take risks, and the Kailas FUGA EX 330 is anything but boring. From its head-turning looks to its massive cushioning, this trail shoe clearly aims to stand out. Our lab tests confirmed that there's serious technology behind the design, and we particularly enjoyed the responsive foam and grippy Vibram outsole. That said, we weren't fully convinced by the overall package: the extra weight and restrictive fit limit its appeal, and the premium price makes those compromises even harder to overlook.

Pros

  • Excellent impact protection
  • Vibram Megagrip delivers solid traction
  • Eye-catching design
  • Versatile for multiple terrains
  • Breathable mesh keeps air flowing
  • Good bounce from supercritical foam
  • Variable-depth lug design
  • Rockered geometry rolls you forward
  • Built for ultra distances
  • Quick lacing system

Contras

  • Premium price
  • Narrow forefoot fit
  • Outsole rubber wears faster than expected
  • A bit heavy for racing

Who should buy

Based on our lab tests and running experience, we believe the Kailas FUGA EX 330 is a great trail shoe for:

  • Runners who love bold designs and want to try a lesser-known brand.
  • Ultrarunners looking for a rugged, heavily-cushioned trail shoe built for long distances.
  • Runners seeking a versatile shoe that handles different trail conditions thanks to its variable-depth lugs.

Who should NOT buy

The biggest drawback of the FUGA EX 330 is its steep price tag. Spending €210 on a trail shoe is a tough sell for most runners, and we believe those on a tighter budget should consider alternatives like the ASICS Trabuco 14 or HOKA Speedgoat 7 instead.

We also found the FUGA EX 330 heavier than expected. Therefore, runners looking for a lighter, more agile feel underfoot should check out the adidas Terrex Agravic Speed.

Amortiguación

Shock absorption

The FUGA EX 330 makes a convincing case for long mountain outings in this test. We measured 136 SA at the heel and 129 SA at the forefoot, with both results comfortably above average.

In our view, the front deserves particular praise for the impact protection it provides, making it a very interesting option for ultra-distance races.

Energy return

Kailas uses a supercritical foam midsole, and we found a good amount of rebound at both ends. Energy return reached 65.5% in the forefoot and 62.1% in the heel.

We like that the midsole combines solid impact protection with a welcome dose of bounce, making cushioning one of the shoe's strongest features. However, given its premium price, we believe this is the bare minimum we all should expect.

Altura de la suela en la zona del talón

With 39.9 mm, there's a substantial amount of material beneath the rearfoot, putting the EX 330 firmly among the taller trail shoes we've tested in the lab.

For runners who prefer plenty of separation from the terrain, this generous stack is an amazing feature. The trade-off is reduced ground feedback, as usual.

We measured a 5.7 mm drop, close to the 5 mm that Kailas advertises.

Dureza de la mediasuela

The thick midsole has a more resistant feel under pressure than its plush-looking profile implies. We measured 42.8 AC with our Asker C durometer, placing the foam on the firmer side of average although by a slim margin.

Cold resistance brought a positive result. After 20 minutes in the freezer, the foam became just 15% firmer.

Rocker

The FUGA EX 330 features a pronounced upward curve at the forefoot and a beveled heel. Given its towering forefoot stack and long-distance focus, we weren't surprised to find a rockered midsole designed to promote efficient transitions over extended runs.

Anchura / Ajuste

The substantial exterior hides a fairly snug interior. After making a gel replica, we measured 92.8 mm across the widest part of the forefoot, a narrower-than-average result.

For an ultra-focused shoe, this is an important limitation. Runners whose feet need extra space as the hours pass should pay close attention to the fit.

Space narrows further near the big toe, where we measured 70.9 mm. The tapered front restricts the room available for the toes to spread, making this a poor match for runners who prefer (or need) a broad toebox.

Profundidad del dibujo de la suela

We measured a lug depth of 3.4 mm, although it's worth noting that KAILAS uses a variable-depth design, with deeper lugs along the sides reaching up to 6 mm.

Kailas FUGA EX 330 Vibram

We found this approach particularly interesting, as most brands stick to a more uniform lug depth. Instead, KAILAS aims to make the FUGA EX 330 more versatile across different terrains without compromising its ability to run fast.

Diseño de la suela exterior

We found triangular lugs arranged in several directions, with small dots along their edges as part of Vibram's Traction Lug design.

The rear uses larger blocks around a central, arrow-shaped opening of exposed foam, with additional grooves in the heel lugs for braking purposes. We like the combination of different tread zones, while the choice of Vibram Megagrip Litebase over regular Megagrip helps keep the weight as low as possible.

Flexibilidad / Rigidez

We noticed more resistance through the forefoot than usual during our runs, and our 30-degree bend test confirmed this with a reading of 20.3N. Despite having no plate, we found the FUGA EX 330 surprisingly stiff... almost like a plated shoe!

Peso

At 10.6 oz (301g), we wouldn't call weight a strength of the FUGA EX 330.

There's a lot of cushioning and upper reinforcement, but the final reading still makes this a substantial shoe to carry over long distances. Runners looking to minimize weight have lighter options to consider, that's for sure.

Estabilidad

Prueba de estabilidad lateral

We wouldn't recommend the FUGA EX 330 for runners with stability issues.

Its aggressive, forward-rolling design is better suited for neutral runners who want to maintain momentum, but the combination of a narrow midfoot and towering stack height makes it a poor choice for overpronators.

Rigidez torsional

We needed 16.1 Nm of torque in our torsional test, placing resistance to twisting close to average.

The midfoot features an aggressive, highly-tapered design that almost resembles a super shoe. In contrast, the rearfoot is surprisingly generous, with a heel platform measuring 97.0 mm across.

In our view, this is one of the EX 330's most useful stability features. The wider heel provides real extra support during heel landings.

We measured just 1.3 mm of outsole rubber beneath the lugs. The Megagrip Litebase construction uses a thinner backing than regular Megagrip, reducing the amount of rubber between the tread and midsole.

Kailas FUGA EX 330 flex

We would have preferred more material here in a shoe designed for long distances, especially given the disappointing wear resistance we found in our abrasion test. However, considering the EX 330's already high weight, we suspect that choosing Litebase was more of a necessity than a preference.

Comodidad

Breathability

Good news for warm-weather ultra races: we rated the EX 330 4/5 after pumping smoke through its upper. The XDiMESH construction allowed good airflow, earning a positive result despite the extensive reinforcement around the toe and sides.

Under our microscope, we found clear openings between the reinforced strands. Those gaps help explain the ventilation, making breathability one of the upper's more appealing features.

Acolchado de la lengüeta

Kailas uses thin round cords through fabric loops, plus a metal hook at the upper closure. We discovered before our first run that the AWS 3.0 system lets runners adjust two zones independently, adding useful control over tension. A flap on the tongue covers a pocket for storing the excess cord, although the process is not as fast as we hoped.

Beneath the AWS 3.0 system, we measured 7.8 mm of tongue padding. That's a generous layer between the cords and the instep.
