Asics Shaw Runner History

First released in time for Spring/Summer of 2014, the Asics Shaw Runner was then known as the Onitsuka Tiger by Asics Shaw Runner, the sneaker keeps on the legacy of the Japanese brand as a major player in the manufacturing of running shoes.

Asics was established as Onitsuka Co., Ltd in Japan by its founder Kihachiro Onitsuka in Kobe on September 1, 1949. The Japanese company first produced running and then basketball footwear but soon delivered shoes for other sports like volleyball, boxing, football, among others.

The word Asics is an acronym that came from the Latin phrase “anima sana in corpore sano” which if translated means “If you pray to God, pray for a sound mind in a healthy body." The same guiding principle would, later on, be the name of the Asics brand.

The chunky profile of the Asics Shaw Runner takes inspiration from the roots of the Onitsuka Tiger legacy with modern touches and styling. The accents are inspired by traditional Japanese Tabi socks and Tiger pattern and are made with Solyte and GEL in the midsole and outsole for lightweight cushioning.

The silhouette also had several makeovers from its usual colorways as Asics made significant collaborations for dapper looking Shaw Runners to include the Offspring x Asics Shaw Runner Desert Pack and Sneakersnstuff x Asics Shaw Runner Tailor Pack. The shoe also gained popularity with the parkour and breakdancing community who were drawn by its lightweight design, durability, and high-traction soles for their jumps and stunts.
