Nike Air Max 97 Utility History

Initially released in 1997, the Nike Air Max 97 was designed by Christian Tresser. The inspiration behind the shoe’s design was Japan’s bullet train. It was the first shoe that was unveiled with the heel to toe Air cushioning. Also, this model introduced a lacing system that was hidden.

Since its release, it was already reinterpreted countless times using different materials and colorways. It was also used in a variety of incredible collaborations. One of its beautiful iterations is the low-top Nike Air Max 97 Utility.

The AM 97 Winter Utility by Nike was released in 2019 on October 14. This rendition exhibits a more technically-aligned design. It has reflective detailing so that it can be seen in the dark while the waterproofed upper helps the foot dry in inclement weather conditions. Also, the outsole with a nubby tread is winter-ready.

Nice to know

  • Since AM 97 was inspired by the bullet trains from Japan, it was given the nickname of “silver bullet.”
