Who should buy
The HOKA Crescendo XC could be ideal for:
- Runners looking for an affordable entry into XC racing, especially those who only compete in a few races each season.
- Those who who prefer a more cushioned and protective XC spike.
- Longer-distance XC racers who appreciate extra cushioning and protection over a minimalist spike.

Who should NOT buy
The heavy weight of the Crescendo XC can be a real deal-breaker for runners who prioritize performance above everything else. If that’s your case, the New Balance FuelCell XC7 v5 should be your next cross-country shoe.
We also think runners looking for the best materials and race-day performance should go straight for the Nike Dragonfly XC or adidas Adizero Avanti XC.

Cushioning
Heel stack
From April 2026, a shoe used in cross-country races can have any thickness. This means that the 27.3 mm of heel stack that we measured in the HOKA Crescendo XC makes it a legal shoe!

| Crescendo XC | 27.3 mm |
| Average | 16.8 mm |
Forefoot stack
Since the regulations now allow any shoe stack height, the 23.1 mm we measured at the forefoot will definitely provide enough cushioning for that final sprint in your race.

| Crescendo XC | 23.1 mm |
| Average | 15.8 mm |
Drop
That makes it a 4.2 mm drop. It's not as flat as usual for XC shoes, but the HOKA Crescendo XC still places a lot of load on your calves and soleus muscles, so you should be wary if you don't usually run in this kind of geometry.

| Crescendo XC | 4.2 mm |
| Average | 1.0 mm |
Midsole softness
The midsole of the Crescendo XC features a full-length, single layer of Profly X. This is the same compound added to the elite road models from HOKA.
Energy return in this model exceeds expectations and pairs well with the above-average shock absorption we experienced, making it perfect for very hilly courses.

Width / Fit
Using the same gel test we use for the road models, we can evaluate the fit of the HOKA Crescendo XC.
With a maximum width of 89.0 mm, the Crescendo XC has an average fit compared to its competitors.

| Crescendo XC | 89.0 mm |
| Average | 88.7 mm |
Toebox width
One thing about cross-country spikes is that they don't have the roomiest fit, and the Crescendo XC doesn't shy away from that.
With a below-average toebox width of 68.2 mm, this shoe provides a very snug but race-focused fit during your races!

| Crescendo XC | 68.2 mm |
| Average | 68.8 mm |
Toebox height
HOKA took a slight turn from what we are used to seeing in cross-country shoes when it comes to toebox height.
With our gel test, we measured 27.9 mm of toebox height, which is above average for this category of shoes. This means the Crescendo XC has some toe wiggle room, and, coupled with a secure fit throughout the shoe, it will feel amazing on longer courses.

| Crescendo XC | 27.9 mm |
| Average | 25.9 mm |
Flexibility / Stiffness
Having no plate, means that the HOKA Crescendo XC provides a highly natural feel that will cater to lots of runners.
You won't feel the shoe resisting the foot, and if flexibility is something you value, the 5.7N we measured in our 30-degree test will feel amazing.

| Crescendo XC | 5.7N |
| Average | 14.5N |
Weight
The extra foam in the Crescendo XC makes it the heaviest cross-country shoe we have tested in our lab. At 8.1 oz (230g), it is a bit of a letdown, especially by today's standards.

| Crescendo XC | 8.1 oz (230g) |
| Average | 5.7 oz (162g) |
Stability
Torsional rigidity
UpdatedWe had to apply up to 12.0 Nm of torque to twist the HOKA Crescendo XC in both directions. This is higher than average, and since it doesn't have a rigid plate, we place most of the blame on the higher stack height.

| Crescendo XC | 12.0 Nm |
| Average | 10.7 Nm |
Heel counter stiffness
The heel counter of the Crescendo XC is clearly made for racing, with no structure, earning it a 1 out of 5 in our manual test.
| Crescendo XC | 1 |
| Average | 1.6 |
Midsole width - forefoot
Up front, we measured a very wide 101.1 mm forefoot, which is ideal for stable landings, and when coupled with the energetic Profly X, makes this shoe a top pick for forefoot strikers seeking powerful takeoffs.

| Crescendo XC | 101.1 mm |
| Average | 96.1 mm |
Midsole width - heel
Same thing with the heel. We usually expect a narrow width for cross-country shoes, yet we measured 67.7 mm for the Crescendo XC, resulting in a more relaxed, less aggressive design than its competitors.

| Crescendo XC | 67.7 mm |
| Average | 63.8 mm |
Durability
Toebox durability
We hardly expect an amazing result in this test. Still, a 2 out of 5 is a fair result for cross-country spikes, which are usually made of very light and thin uppers.
| Crescendo XC | 2 |
| Average | 2.2 |
Heel padding durability
By adding some padding to the heel counter, HOKA improved the comfort, but at the expense of its durability. After our Dremel test, we gave it a score of 1 out of 5, the worst score we ever recorded in a track and field shoe!
| Crescendo XC | 1 |
| Average | 3.8 |
Outsole durability
We replicated our Dremel test on the colorful outsole of the Crescendo XC, which features multiple thick lugs for added traction.
We measured a tread depth of 0.7 mm, which indicates amazing durability for this shoe when running on hard surfaces for cross-country races.

| Crescendo XC | 0.7 mm |
Outsole thickness
The outsole is 1.9 mm thick, which is enough to handle the expected wear. For a heavy shoe like the Crescendo XC, adding more rubber would be excessive.

| Crescendo XC | 1.9 mm |
| Average | 2.6 mm |
Pins
The HOKA Crescendo XC features a removable 6-pin setup for added grip and traction.

Misc
Insole thickness
This insole is very thin, and at only 2.0 mm, HOKA reduced its thickness to maximize the amount of Profly X while remaining within World Athletics' stack height regulations.

| Crescendo XC | 2.0 mm |
| Average | 2.6 mm |
Lug depth
At 3.0 mm, we think the lug depth of the Crescendo XC is very high compared with its competitors. For reference, the HOKA Mafate X, a trail shoe, has the same lug depth as this shoe. Maybe the brand could have reduced the lug size to save on overall weight.

| Crescendo XC | 3.0 mm |
Tongue padding
This tongue features a very thick padding for a track and field spike. We measured it at 3.8 mm, which is thicker than many road racing shoes.

Again, if HOKA intends to cut weight from the next version of the Crescendo XC, trimming the tongue padding could be one of the main changes!

| Crescendo XC | 3.8 mm |
| Average | 2.3 mm |
Heel tab
We found no heel tab on the HOKA Crescendo XC, but we were not expecting one on a racing shoe.

| Crescendo XC | None |
Price
The low price is one of the Crescendo XC's biggest advantages. If you're looking into racing a couple of XC races in the year and don't want to invest too much in a shoe, you should definitely check this one!
| Crescendo XC | $90 |
| Average | $141 |
