A silhouette that remains a staple in the sneaker industry, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star High Top is one unmistakable silhouette. Its timeless design has captured the hearts of many people from different cultures of different generations.

This classic sneaker has been introduced again and again with a fresh look without swaying away from its true image. For its recent variation, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Renew High Top, it displays the iconic silhouette of the original Chucks but the most remarkable part of the shoe is its material as it is made with recycled materials, resulting into unique patterns on its upper.

Converse initially introduced the All Star High Top in 1917 and called it as the “Non-Skid.” It showcased the high-top profile that we all see today with a natural brown colorway with black trimmings and its notable small rubber toecaps and its “Big C” leather logo patch on the heel. The patch wasn’t necessarily for the shoe branding but its purpose was for ankle protection. The silhouette was recognized at that time as one of the lightest shoes for basketball as well.

In 1920, the silhouette then renamed as the “All Star,” and along with its name change is the brand releasing an all-black colorway with a canvas or leather upper materials. At the start, the shoe wasn’t really made for basketball but for soccer and netball, which was the early type of basketball.

In 1921, Converse sealed a deal with Chuck Taylor, a basketball player who saw the high potential of the All Star Silhouette. With his collaboration with the brand, he managed to bring the sneaker to its peak and was the reason behind its immense popularity. As a recognition for his efforts, Converse added his name to the silhouette’s notable ankle patch, and thus, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star was born.

The Chucks transitioned naturally from a basketball shoe into a staple in the sneaker culture. It remained one of the top and highly-recognized sneakers of all-time through decades and decades. It became a symbol of different sub-cultures and an icon in the street style category and has encountered numerous modifications on its design from its materials to its colorways.

                 The “Renew Initiative”

Aiming to be an evocative symbol for the new era of footwear design, Converse launched the “Renew Initiative”  in 2019, which is a program that focuses on recycling and utilizing post-industrial and post-consumer waste materials. The brand took the liberty to convert its iconic sneakers into more sustainable products and released the Renew Collection.

The Converse Chuck Taylor All Star High Top is built with an upper made of recycled material from these three Renew Processes sources: recycled PET (RPET), upcycled textiles, and recycled cotton canvas. These three Renew Processes are officially known as “Renew Denim,” “Renew Canvas,” and “Renew Cotton.”

  • Converse offers the “Converse By You” for the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Renew Collection. It is a program from the brand where you can customize your own pair of Chucks.
  • This version of the Chucks is “made from 30% to 40% of manufacturing waste cotton.”
  • For the upper material of the sneaker, the cotton is mixed with the polyester, resulting in a yarn which is what is used for the cotton canvas base.
  • Notable speckled detailing is observed on the rubber sole which is a result of regrinding recycled rubber.
