Who should NOT buy the Salomon XA Pro 3D

Do not get the Salomon XA Pro 3D if you're looking for an agile and featherlight trail running shoe.

All-weather design

Packed with a waterproof feature, the Salomon XA Pro 3D can handle both dry and wet conditions. Even better, it's quick-drying. So if you cross creeks, muddy sections, and more, there's no need to worry about retained moisture.

Most waterproof shoes fall short on breathability. However, the XA Pro 3D is the opposite. Runners report that their feet remained "cool and dry" in the shoe.

Extremely grippy

Like the Salomon Speedcross series, the Contragrip outsole features moderately-sized, aggressive lugs that are built for highly technical terrains.

True to how it's billed, the outsole clings like claws on the most unfriendly terrains, off-trail runners claim. Even better, the lugs don't collect mud that can hamper the shoe's traction.

Thanks to its grip, the Salomon XA Pro 3D is also a great lightweight alternative to hiking boots

Up front, the trail shoe has a rubber toe cap that prevents stubbed toes. Add in the shoe's dual-density EVA midsole, rocky surfaces are muted.

In the heel, shock absorption is also a priority. A composite foam is placed in the rear, dampening shock during landing.

The midsole and upper complement each other in stabilizing the feet. The upper's snug wrap supports the ankles while the firm midsole keeps strides steady.

That said, it's a stability shoe that's perfect for overpronators (whose feet roll inward excessively), and runners who have flat feet and plantar fasciitis.

Convenient lockdown

Salomon XA Pro 3D quicklace

Equipped with a Quicklace system, the Salomon XA Pro 3D's laces are easy to cinch down. What's more is they stay locked the entire run.

Experts also love the Sensifit upper, which provides a customizable, "glove-like" fit.

Lacks protection

Although highly padded, the heel only provides minimal shock absorption. This is according to several testers who ran through rugged and rough terrains.

Many testers agree that for $130, the Salomon XA Pro 3D is too pricey.
