Bottom line

Hikers who constantly seek support and comfort in a low-cut shoe may find satisfaction in the versatile Vasque Mantra 2.0 GTX (the waterproof variant of the Mantra 2.0). It was, however, lambasted for its faulty width and questionable traction on smooth grounds. By and large, the Vasque Mantra 2.0 GTX may have earned negative remarks that tarnish its name, but its good points still give outdoor lovers reasons to check it out.

The Mantra 2.0 was fine on moderate trail hikes and I enjoyed its comfort, but when I upped the game taking off-trail and onto rocks they let me down some—my feet didn’t stay firmly planted in the shoes, and the sole flex was too soft to support me going up rocky steps and ledges.

  • American brand Vasque designed the Mantra 2.0 GTX to offer boot-like support for tackling a range of outdoor adventures. It has a waterproof and durable upper, thanks to a combination of leather and mesh lined with a Gore-Tex laminate.
  • Its sole unit is comprised of a polyurethane midsole, TPU stabilizer, and a Vibram Nuasi outsole. This component provides underfoot cushioning, support, and surface traction.

The Vasque Mantra 2.0 GTX is a hiking shoe for men and women. It comes in full and half sizes with standard and wide width options. Generally, it runs true to size.

It is designed using the Perpetuum last which accommodates low-arched foot. Its profile includes a roomy toe box and tailored instep. This design permits natural toe splay and keeps the heel in place to prevent slippage. Its speed lacing system allows fit customization.

The Vasque Mantra 2.0 GTX features Vibram Nuasi with XS Trek Compound. It has a balance between traction and durability to deliver a responsive ride on various ground conditions. The angular and multidirectional lugs grip on the trails while its slight upward extension at the toe area adds protection. Furthermore, due to its non-marking characteristic, this shoe can also be used indoors.

This day hiking shoe from Vasque uses a molded polyurethane (PU) midsole. This material has high resiliency (resistant to constant compression) which enables it to provide long-lasting cushioning. It is partnered with a TPU midfoot stabilizer which renders underfoot support and prevents unwanted twisting of the foot. The hiker’s foot rests on a dual-density EVA footbed to optimize comfort.

Vasque designers used a water-hating 1.8 mm nubuck leather and mesh for the upper of the Mantra 2.0 GTX. They lined it with a Gore-Tex Extended Comfort laminate, which through its non-insulated construction, yields breathability and grants water protection.

A strip of leather is reinforced on each end (toe and heel areas) to add durability and protection when tackling rocky trails. The shoe also has a pull tab at the heel which enables a quick on and off. This hiking shoe features combination eyelets, with the men’s featuring a pair of closed hooks (second from the top) and an extra pair of loop eyelets.
