The Vans Classic Slip-On, or initially known as Style #48, was first released in 1977. It quickly gained a footing in the budding southern California skateboarding community towards the end of the 70s. This silhouette was created to address their need for fuss-free shoes with the same non-skid rubber soles.

A few years later, Steve Van Doren noticed how kids used black pens to create a checkerboard look on the shoes’ midsole. He then moved the pattern to the canvas upper. Thus, the unmistakable Vans Checkerboard Slip-On was born.

It was in 1982 when the iconic slip-on sneakers from Vans was worn by Sean Penn in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. After the movie’s trailer was shown, the shoes gained notoriety not only among skaters but among non-skaters as well. The Vans Slip-Ons were later featured on the cover of the movie’s soundtrack, too. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Aside from the Checkered Slip-On, the classic silhouette was also reinvented in several colorways and styles, such as the Brush Twill and Textured Suede. The brand collaborated with popular brands to design and release quality sneakers for a broader range of audience as well.

The Vans Textured Suede Slip-On evokes the same silhouette that the brand is known for. This well-made sneaker comes in a cool, relaxed vibe yet still remains relevant and iconic, function-wise.
