Vans Mix Checker SK8-Hi History

Initially, when the Van Doren Company opened its retail stores in Anaheim in March 1966, the company was so new that several boxes on the shelves are empty. However, there were few units to try on. It was between 12 to 16 customers who placed their orders for the first Vans deck shoes or Style 44. The Style 44 or popularly known today as the Authentic had to be manufactured overnight on the premises and then picked up the next day.

Eventually, Vans started to manufacture other shoes that appreciated by skateboarders, BMX riders, and other athletes. These sneakers promised to deliver performance and comfort, among which was the Style 38 or SK8-Hi. The Vans SK8-Hi was originally launched back in 1978.

The history of the iconic silhouette of SK8-Hi started when the company attempted to address the wear and tear issue caused by performing skateboarding tricks. Hence, the Style 36 or the Old Skool was born in 1977. However, the Old Skool was not enough for it did not give the ankle protection that skateboarders required. So, therefore, the Style 37 emerged. It was the Old Skool with a mid-top silhouette by which was launched in 1977. Yet, this model was not enough to meet the needs.

In 1978, finally, the Style 38, a sneaker with a high-top silhouette, was released in the market. Currently, it was famously called the SK8-Hi. This sneaker is built with sturdy leather and canvas upper that provides sufficient and support. It has gum outsoles with the waffle tread pattern for excellent traction. Apart from the Old Skool, the SK8-Hi also sports the Jazz Sidestripe that gives an added design as well as increased durability.
