Vans Flame SK8-Hi Reissue History

Founded in 1966 by brothers James and Paul Van Doren, Vans is a California-based shoe company known best for producing top-notch performance skate shoes. One of the brand’s most iconic silhouette ever created is the Vans SK8-Hi, which has been in the market since the ‘70s and remains as one of the most relevant Vans kicks that consumers of all ages appreciate up to this day.

The SK8-Hi was first introduced in 1978 as the “Style 38” and recognized as the second Vans model to feature the iconic Vans Sidestripe or then called the “jazz stripe.” A crucial part of the brand’s history, the SK8-Hi was the first high-top skate shoe ever produced and brought a fresh look to skate parks and, at the same time, took the skate shoes’ functionality to another level by enhancing ankle protection with its high-cut construction.

The SK8-Hi's popularity significantly rose during the 1990s to 2000s through several collaborations with a wide range of artists in varying fields from haute couture to street fashion and music. In 2010s era, the iconic silhouette further reached the action sports category with rider athletes dubbing it as their favorite Vans of choice.

Fast forward to May 2017, Vans reissued the classic “Flame” pack which includes the famous SK8-Hi silhouette along with another favorite model from the brand, the Old Skool low-top. Popular during the ‘90s, the iconic look made a surprising return that nonetheless made old-school Vans followers more than pleased and nostalgic.

Named officially as Vans Flame SK8-Hi Reissue, the high-top silhouette features a black canvas and suede upper with a distinctive flames print along the sidewalls. Accentuating the eye-catching print is the signature white Vans Sidestripe in leather material. The white midsole and laces also bring contrast to the design. The Vans Flame SK8-Hi Reissue retails at $65.
