Vans 25Th Half Cab Pro History
Back in 1992, legendary skate icon Steve Caballero partnered up with Vans to design a mid-top skate shoe called the Half Cab. It was based on Caballero’s first signature skate shoe that released in 1988, the Vans Steve Caballero.
The Vans Steve Caballero is a padded high-top skate shoe with supreme cushioning and protection that skaters need for their feet when skating. Because of its features, the shoe became a favorite staple in skate parks for some years. However, after some time, the Steve Caballero shoe's popularity came with an interesting fact – skaters have been modifying their pairs by cutting and slashing the collar then sealing it off with duct tape for increased freedom of movement and improved quick flip tricks. And the Half Cab shoe was born.
The Half Cab eventually reached a “best skate shoe ever produced” status. It features a mid-top construction with padded collar, suede uppers with double stitching, and a vulcanized Vans signature waffle outsole. Completing its look is the Half-Cab brand patch on the sides.
In 2007, the Vans Half Cab model received an upgrade for improved performance through the Vans Half Cab Pro. Vans ditched the vulcanized waffle outsole of the Half Cab and replaced it with a cupsole for enhanced impact cushioning, additional support, and grip.
2017 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Vans Half Cab shoe. To commemorate the momentous event, Vans released the Vans 25th Half Cab Pro. It comes with the original design of the Half Cab Pro with a durable suede upper, double-stitched toe cap, reinforcements on high wear areas, a mesh tongue, Ultracush HD insoles, and a sufficiently padded collar. A nod to the celebration is Half Cab leather tabs on the side panels and tongue, as well as the "XXV" print on the heel.
Vans 25Th Half Cab Pro Style
The Vans 25th Half Cab Pro is mid-top skate shoe with an old-school, chunky exterior that stands out from typical low-top and minimal-looking skate shoes of today. The upper is made of tonal suede that gives out a clean and versatile look despite the chunkiness of the silhouette. This shoe gives you not only the functional features of a skate shoe but also a piece of history of skateboarding and Steve Caballero's legacy. It can be paired with shorts or jeans for a relaxed look whether skating or not.
Fit & Sizing
The Vans 25th Half Cab Pro is available in men's sizing that ranges from 6.5 to 13, or approximately equivalent to sizes 8 to 14.5 in women's sizing. The mid-top construction provides ample ankle support without much restriction. The lace-up closure can be adjusted for a secure and customizable fit on foot, while the tongue and collar are sufficiently padded for extra comfort. Overall support and hold are excellent.
The Vans 25th Half Cab Pro features an upgraded skate style heritage with a combination of suede and canvas on the upper and a single-wrap foxing tape for enhanced durability. However, what makes this rendition even more special are the small details that give a nod to Steve Caballero and his skateboarding legacy.
On the heel is an “XXV” stitch detailing, which represents the silhouette’s 25th anniversary. The Half Cab brandings on the side panels and tongue, on the other hand, received an upgrade. From the printed Half Cab logos, this particular version displays leather tabs with embossed Half Cab logos. Performance-wise, this shoe, like the original Half Cab Pro model, features DURACAP reinforcement rubber underlays in high wear areas for extra durability.
- The Vans 25th Half Cab Pro also features an UltraCush HD sockliner for impact cushioning and excellent board feel, and Vans' original waffle outsole for optimum grip and control.
- The tongue is of mesh material for breathability.
- The Vans Off the Wall logo can be seen on the back heel.
