Good to know

  • Zoot is making the Ultra Kalani 3.0 more versatile by offering a slightly softer cushioning. While the shoe is previously designed for racing or speed sessions, the added cushioning makes it a doable high-mileage training partner.
  • Because of the materials being used and the compressed upper, the 3rd edition of the Kalani weighs lighter than the previous model. Added cushioning without adding weight is something that should translate to improved performance on the road.
  • The more visible update happens to be the mesh, which is lighter and softer with lesser stitches. This helps the entire upper adapt to the runner’s foot and lessens the risk of irritations.
  • The heel support goes a tad higher in the Zoot Kalani 3.0. As it now sits higher, Zoot compensates by making it a bit softer to avoid hot spots. This update still holds the heel very well and enhances the comfort in this area.

The shoe is marketed as standard when it comes to fit and sizing. However, it runs a bit smaller than the past version, which could entail adjustments for those who want more space in the forefoot and toe box. The heel is just about right while the midfoot is perfect. Available widths are D and B while sizes are from 7 to 14 for the men’s and 5 to 12 for the women’s.

The outsole is mostly covered in Zoot’s own version of a tough carbon rubber. This type of outsole rubber is proven in providing a long-lasting performance.

The full-length Z-Bound midsole foam, which is light as a feather, extremely resilient, and delivers superior responsiveness is the star technology in this area. Working together with the Z-Bound is the patented CarbonSpan+ or carbon fiber on the sole of the shoe for torsional stability and powerful takeoffs. This technology also helps the shoe to reduce weight as no added foam or outsole rubber is needed for a stable platform.

The upper features the Zoot technology called UltraFit. This is a stretchy mesh material that provides adequate breathability and adapts extremely well to the foot. An added bonus is the upper’s ability to keep off debris. The seamless and soft interior makes sockless running such an enjoyable experience in this shoe. An asymmetrical lacing works with the compressible upper for the best fit. Loops in the tongue and the heel make entry and exit very convenient.
