Paul and James Van Doren, Serge D’Elia, and Gordon Lee started the Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim California on March 16, 1966. Later on, Vans announced and merged with VF corporation in 2004.
The story of the most coveted checkerboard design began in 1977 when the Classic Slip-On or also known as the style 98 was invented. Steve, son of Vans founder Paul Van Doren, noticed that skaters were drawing and coloring black pens to the rubber midsole of their shoe to create a checkerboard pattern. Steve developed the idea and moved the pattern to the upper canvas. It was in 1982 that this low-profile shoe became immensely popular when Sean Penn’s slacker character Spiccoli immortalized it. This enduring checkerboard style became globally recognized.
Vans designers scaled the pattern of this classic and timeless silhouette and juxtaposed small and large black and white checkerboard design with micro checkers along the quarter panels. Featuring the durable canvas upper, the low-profile Vans Mix Checker Slip-on has elastic side accents, padded collar, and rubber outsoles.
