6 reasons to buy

  • Protection: A great number of runners and hikers laud the Ultraventure Pro for keeping their feet safe on demanding terrain. They say that hard rock landings and kicking roots aren’t an issue in this shoe.
  • Traction: “Sticky,” “zero slips on snow or dirt,” “surefooted” — that’s how trail goers describe the outsole grip. It works admirably up- and downhill, on wet surfaces, and grassy areas.
  • Toebox: Similar to Altra, this trail shoe offers a large forefoot space to splay out the toes.
  • Water-resistance: Although it’s not a waterproof shoe, runners praise its ability to keep light moisture at bay when running in the rain, through puddles and snow.
  • Stability: With its wide firm sole and a burly heel counter, the Ultraventure Pro feels steady on unpredictable terrain.
  • Rugged upper: A solid rubber overlay on top of the tightly-knit mesh makes the upper incredibly durable against trail elements.

3 reasons not to buy

  • Lockdown issues: More than a few experts complained about not being able to get a secure fit which resulted in heel slipping. They mentioned that the hold “didn’t inspire confidence.”
  • Outsole delamination: Several wearers reported that the rubber detached sooner than expected. It happened after around 50-100 miles for some and even after 15 miles for one person.
  • Rigid underfoot: The firm cushioning, lugs, and rock plate make the shoe unforgiving on hard-packed ground or when running over 50K. Some go as far as comparing their feet to being “hammered.”

Bottom line

Topo Athletic Ultraventure Pro is a hardy “venturer” for the technical trails, where grip and protection are valued above all in the footwear. Meant as a hybrid of a running and hiking shoe, it comes on the firm side which hold it back from being a dedicated ultra shoe (despite its name).

If you value comfortable fit and softer cushioning and don’t require a rock plate, check out the Ultraventure 2 instead.

Topo Athletic Ultraventure Pro: tough “rocky” shoe

The Ultraventure Pro iteration from the Topo Athletic trail series was designed as a counterpart to the long-distance Ultraventure runner. The Pro comes with a few tweaks that make it more appropriate for running and thru-hiking on technical trails and rocky mountain paths.

Here is what makes the Pro the tougher one:

  • firmer cushioning
  • added rock plate
  • more rugged built
  • more resistant to rain

The shoe is NOT recommended for any road activity due to its stiffness. Distances over 50K may come at the price of being beaten up.
