TOMS was started by Blake Mycoskie, an Arlington businessman and ex-Amazing Race contestant, in 2006. He was in Argentina when he became fascinated by the alpargata, a versatile slip-on shoe that is worn by most people in the said country.

After traveling outside the city, Mycoskie saw that the children had no shoes. He also met an American volunteer who enlightened him about the reality of how many Argentinian kids were in dire need of shoes. Mycoskie witnessed the social limitations and dangerous infections that affected the children by living barefoot. He was then determined to create a solution that can sustain this deficit.

When he returned to his home in California, Mysockie sold his online driving education firm for $500,000 to fund his new venture. The name Toms is short for “Tomorrow’s Shoes.”  The brand aims to donate a pair of shoes to a child in underdeveloped countries for every pair sold.

He enlisted the help of some Argentinian craftsmen to modify the original alpargatas. His first retail customer was American Rag. They were enamored by the brand’s back story, and they felt that buyers will also be moved by it. A fashion writer for the Los Angeles Times soon caught wind of Toms and its advocacy, that this person decided to write an article about the brand. Rapidly, the company’s publicity spread to other magazines such as Elle, Vogue, People, and Time. This led to big-time retailers placing a significant number of orders.

By the end of their first summer, Toms was able to sell 10,000 pairs of shoes. True to their advocacy, the company distributed 10,000 pairs of shoes to the children in Argentina in October of the same year. By 2011, more than 500 retailer stores were carrying their shoes all over the world.

Today, TOMS has designed and manufactured shoe models other than their original espadrille-style sneakers. They now have lace-up sneakers like the TOMS Lenox, Del Rey, and Payton.
