Overview of this review
Good to know
- Salomon makes a sturdy shoe even tougher in the XA Pro 3d Ultra 2 GTX. With more forefoot protection reinforcing the toe box, runners can actually kick a stone and not feel a thing with this kind of protection.
- The midfoot to heel structure and support gets a boost in the form of a large overlay that spans these areas. It holds the midfoot really well and provides structure to the heel for a really locked in feel.
- Salomon also modifies the outsole by using more aggressive perimeter lugs and putting a good number of lugs in the middle section of the shoe. Both of these updates are geared towards making the shoe more versatile on various outdoor terrains.
The fit of the 2nd version of the XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX is very much like the original model. It has medium space in the heel, midfoot, and forefoot that most runners will find comfortable. Available widths are D and B for the men’s and women’s versions. Sizes are accurate and offered in the following: 7 to 15 for the men’s and 5 to 11 for the women’s.
Salomon uses two premium outsole technologies in the XA Pro 3D Ultra 2 GTX. The Non-Marking Contagrip rubber is found in most trail shoes under Salomon. It is made of a special rubber compound that deliver excellent grip on the trails. Enhancing the traction in the most difficult and toughest trail is the All-Mountain configuration of the lugs. In this new version, Salomon made the perimeter lugs more aggressive the same as the new Speedcross 5. It is designed to improve its performance when making quick or sudden turns. Part of the change in the outsole is the presence of bigger lugs from the heel to the forefoot. It is an update that will make the grip of this shoe more reliable and versatile.
The Energy Cell 2, which is Salomon’s specialized midsole foam for excellent responsiveness and resiliency runs the entire length of the shoe. Supporting this foam is a standard EVA for added cushioning, responsiveness, and durability. A big part of almost all Salomon shoes is the 3D Chassis System. It is made of composite foam that absorbs shock really well and cradles the heel in comfort and support. Forming part of the 3D Advanced Chassis is a thermoplastic unit that reins in overpronation. Salomon made the medial side even tougher and reliable by using a high-density EVA.
A very breathable, anti-debris mesh and tough as nail overlays make up a large portion of the upper. The overlays are particularly significant as they bring a tank-like structure and support all throughout the shoe. It brings muscle and durability to a shoe built for the toughest terrains. Sitting below the anti-debris mesh and lining the entire section of the interior is the Gore-Tex waterproofing membrane. Gore-Tex lining is solely used in shoes to keep off water in a really effective way.
A very well-padded collar, tongue, and an Ortholite Sockliner make step-in comfort and fit very nice. Protection on the trail is delivered by a gusseted tongue that helps keep trail debris out and an unbelievable toe rubber cap. Salomon uses an asymmetrical lacing system with Kevlar-made laces to get the best and most comfortable fit. Aside from the Gore-Tex that fights off water and other elements, the Mud Guard lining of this shoe helps with the water-resistance and keeps mud off.
