Who should buy the Salomon X Crest GTX
The Salomon X Crest GTX hiking shoes feature the ruggedness of quality hiking boots in a much lightweight and low-cut package. It is a solid option if you:
- Prefer a hiking shoe that protects the foot from slush, rain, or water.
- Prefer a hiking shoe that provides protection but also enhances the durability of the shoe.
Size and fit
The Salomon X Crest GTX is a low-cut hiker for men and women. It features the SensiFit construction system that wraps or cradles the foot from the midsole to the lacing system for a secure, glove-like fit. This upper construction enables the wearer to adjust the tightness at virtually every part of the shoe.
For a more comfortable stride, the collar and tongue are padded. There's also a pull loop at the back for easy on and off. Lastly, the X Crest GTX features a traditional lacing system for a precise fit.
Can withstand heavy use and abuse
Focused on long-term wear, the X Crest GTX is equipped with the Contagrip outsole - a proprietary technology of Salomon. This outsole is made of a durable rubber compound that can withstand heavy use and abuse.
Ensures surface traction
Its tread pattern is designed to ensure traction on both hard and smooth or soft and lose surfaces.
Flexible and long-wearing
For the midsole, this shoe utilizes EVA foam. It's a lightweight material that has great shock-absorbing properties. While EVA is not as long-wearing as PU, it is more flexible, thereby promoting freedom of movement.
Comfortable footbed
On top of the midsole is an Ortholite footbed which is shaped like the foot. This insole is touted for its superior cushioning, breathability, and durability. Since it's removable, you can use your own orthotics if you prefer.
Protective yet comfortable environment for the foot
For the upper, the Salomon X Crest GTX low-top hiker features a combination of mesh, textile, and PU-coated leather. Together, these materials create a protective yet comfortable environment for the foot.
Waterproof yet breathable
Lining the shoe interior is the Gore-Tex waterproof membrane. While waterproof membranes tend to cause overheating, the mesh fabric in the upper allows for some breathability.
Easy to adjust lacing system
The shoe also comes with a mudguard that protects the lateral and medial sides of the foot, along with a toe cap that bars your foot from sharp sticks, rocks, and objects. Completing the upper is a lace-up closure that lets you adjust the fit whenever needed.
