Updates to Salomon OUTline GTX
- The Salomon OUTline GTX is a waterproof hiking shoe that delivers sneaker-like comfort to day hikers. Its textile fabric upper is lined with an insulated Gore-Tex laminate which also renders water protection and breathability.
- The shoe’s injected ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) midsole grants a cushioned and supportive ride to users. Its Contagrip outsole, on the other hand, provides sure footing on challenging terrain through its aggressive lug pattern.
Size and fit
The OUTline GTX is available for men and women. According to Salomon, it is built using a running last; hence giving it a slim, lightweight facade. It accommodates those with a standard-width foot. Its traditional lace-up closure permits a personalized and precise forefoot fit.
Salomon’s OUTline GTX uses a non-marking Contagrip outsole to deliver traction on virtually all types of terrain. Its profile is filled with a reverse Chevron pattern of 5 mm lugs to render grip on wet and dry surfaces. The sole’s heel section contains grooves that aid in downhill conditions. Moreover, its front section extends upwards to the toes to prevent stubbing.
This low-cut hiking shoe absorbs shock and creates a cushioned ride through its injected EVA midsole. A removable Ortholite sock liner supplies underfoot comfort and arch support. This component incorporates an EVA heel cup in its design for improved heel support. Additionally, the footbed has an open-cell structure for optimal moisture management, creating a cool in-shoe environment.
The Salomon OUTline GTX features an upper made of abrasion-resistant textile fabric. It is a quick-drying material that is lined with a Gore-Tex Insulated Comfort laminate to seal water out without compromising breathability. A sturdy protective toe cap improves the shoe’s durability.
Its closure system uses a series of eyelets to make lace-up configurations secure and convenient. Its gusseted tongue prevents debris from entering the gear. Also, the footwear’s padded collar promotes comfort.
Salomon OUTline GTX vs. X Ultra 3 GTX
Salomon is known for making some of the toughest hiking boots in the market. Two of their most popular products are the OUTline GTX and the X Ultra 3 GTX. Both are waterproof shoes that you can take to the trail. While they have many similarities, they also have distinct features that should help you decide which boot matches your needs.
Upper. Both the OUTline GTX and the X Ultra 3 GTX are comfortable out of the box but they vary greatly in terms of how they fit and feel. The OUTline GTX is much slimmer and feels more like a running shoe and is extremely light on the foot. Additionally, the ankle is cut noticeably low, promoting more freedom of movement. On the other hand, the X Ultra 3 GTX features a more robust upper, thick padding in the tongue and collar, and bulkier lacing system and overall construction.
Weight. In terms of weight, the OUTline GTX undercuts the X Ultra 3 GTX. It makes a great option for fast hikers who are after ultra-lightweight shoes. However, lightweight boots such as this won't give you much support when you're carrying a heavy load.
Traction. Both these shoe models make use of the Salomon Contagrip soles. Thus, they are both long-wearing and pretty aggressive. Nonetheless, the OUTline and X Ultra shoes vary in terms of tread pattern, which has an impact on their level of grip and traction. In particular, the X Ultra 3 GTX features chevron lugs that hold nicely in off-camber sections. Salomon calls it the Descent Control technology. There's also an addition of gill-like cutouts in the heel that boosts downhill traction. Overall the X Ultra 3 performs well on technical hikes.
Lacing system. Hikers who are concerned about their laces becoming untied, the X Ultra 3 GTX makes a better option as it features Salomon's innovative QuickLace system which allows one-pull tightening. The OUTline has the traditional flat, low-profile laces which also offer a secure fit but can take a bit more time to tie up.
Nice to know
-Another waterproof product from Salomon is the X Ultra 3 Mid GTX.
